I have to find a new home for him
Hi Everyone. I used to come here quite a bit some time ago. My dog has always been extremely fearful and at times aggressive. We had a private trainer tell us he was previously feral and an extremely fearful dog. Right now we have to seperate him from my daughter and he isn't getting the attention he should have. We have come a long way but we just can't do it anymore. We just wanted a mellow dog as we never have taken care of a dog before, not a dog with so many issues.
I know I might get flamed but just know I have done more and put up with probably more than 99.9% people would. I love this dog...I really looked at him as my child. To think about giving him up is harder than anything....but my daughter is my priority (by law as well). My heart is breaking really and I'm not even sure I can go through with it but I just wanted to ask you all about what I should do... Should I take him to a no kill shelter? Find someone in the country that has no kids? I don't know where to go from here... |

I just reread my last post I posted here a year ago and I got some good advice. If you have anything more to add I'd appreciate it!

hopefully he's already fixed, I'd call around to rescues, a shelter will cage him and make him even more afraid than he is

puppy4ever- I won't flame you. I can't even imagine how terrible it must feel to even talk about it. I am sure some of the more knowledgable Pets.ca members will have some advice/ options for you from this point on. It would be nice if he could get into rescue and be rehabilitated, instead of put into a scary shelter for who knows how long.
Please do what is best for your pup. My thoughts are with you

sorry for the double post but I just read your thread from a year ago.
Did you ever see a vet to rule out further health issues? Have there been any "incidents" in the past year? How old is your dog now? How much exercise does he get per day? Is he well socialized with other dogs?

Is he a specific breed? Maybe try contacting a breed rescue?
I'm really sorry to hear this. It must be a hard decision to make. |

Think the dog is a GSD x. Only breed rescue I am aware of that will happily take a dog who has snapped and made contact is JRT rescue as many JRTs are often in inappropriate homes. Most rescues don't want to take on the liability of a dog who snaps let alone has made contact for whatever the reason.
I read the thread from last year, there is lots of good advice in it. Did you even manage to find a behaviourist to work with you and your dog?

Have you tried contacting a animal behavioriest? Some shelters have one on staff.
Have you learned why is he fearful? was he abused in the past? A trainer is really good for a fearful dog. I would try an animal behaviourist. ACO22 |

There may be others that will, It may also vary between provinces and states what rescue is willing to take more liability. Just on average most won't take ones that have snapped repeatedly, and rarer if the dog has ever made contact. Lot of liability at risk, too much for many rescues.

Firstly - I will not judge your decision. Sometimes it's just a bad 'marriage'. It happens. You are asking for help and that is alot more than most would do.
If you can tell me what province you live in, I may be able to connect you with a rescue. Please let me know. |

Thanks Chris21711. Ok I know of a group that took an Amstaff that I rescued. They are trainers and are starting up a rescue. Nice girl and very knowledgeable.
How about seeing the trainer - getting an accessment first and then talking to her about the rescue if she finds that the dog and you are not going to work out??? I can provide you with her name and a link to the training/rescue. Would this be of interest? If so, please ask Marco permission to have access to your PM if you do not already have so and I will PM you. |
