Young Dog and possible Seizure
Hi People. I'll be taking my 4 yr old schipperke to the vets 2morrow, but hoped you can give me some insight or suggestions in the meantime. Onyx has always reflected great health and has had all shots and regular vet visits. But he woke yesterday from his nap in what appeared to be a sort of seizure, or worse yet a stroke! He stiffened up, convulsed violently, became seriously aggitated & critically aggressive, foaming at the mouth. In a matter of moments it was over and he seemed ok except for his extreme thirst and two accidents in the house. Of course he's still pretty exhausted and has slept alot. He seems to follow me all over the house (much more than usual) and I find him staring at me intensely which concerns me for his vision.
Is there anything I can or should do if/when this "seizure" should re-occur? I felt so helpless but he wouldn't let anyone come near him. Can anyone offer anything at all? I'm at a complete loss and a nervous wreck til he's seen. Please people, if you can give me any info or share your own experiences I'd be so grateful for the input. Thank You. |

Did you take your dog to the vet immediately after this happened?

I tried taking him to the emergency weekend vet but got lost and by the time I realized how far out of the way I was, he seemed to be ok so I turned around and went back home w/him. He'll be seen tomorrow at his regular vets though, and I did consult w/the doctor.

Glad to hear it. It could very well have been a seizure like you say. Seizures in many cases can be very effectively managed with medication. Generally speaking, if a dog is having a seizure, don't touch it...as you've seen they can get uncharacteristically aggressive and bite. Remove any possibly dangerous objects from around the dog (furniture, lamps etc.) and maybe try to cushion the area around it. Reduce or eliminate any unnecessary stimulus from the area (loud music, bright lights, screaming people...) There's not much else you can do. Once it stops, get thee hence to the vet, pronto. It's probably a good idea to figure out the shortest route to your emerg/after-hours clinic in case it happens again.
Here's a good article with some basic info...Seizures

Thank you so much for the informative article; I just finished reading it and learned quite a bit; especially the part about not trying to "comfort" the dog by handling him during a seizure. More than ever I'm now convinced he had a grand mall seizure; it was horrendous!!
My dog has always been known to eat anything & everything! So I'm still hoping that all his tests 2morrow will come back clear and that perhaps he ate something bad for him in the yard (ie poisonous plant or something?), and that this is going to be an isolated case. Keeping my fingers crossed. Again, I want to thank you for taking the time to send me that wonderful article!! |
