Off again, on again limp

My pup is as 7 month old Chocolate Lab. She doesn't limp prior to exercise, or during, but when she gets up to get going her left hind leg is very stiff and she is reluctant to put her leg down...she hobbles. This has been on again, off again for about 2 months now. Also, she has a large "bump" on her rear.

Hi davies4,

Your dog could have a sprain or tear. The large bump on her rear is also worrysome. she really needs to be examined on several levels by a vet.

2 months is way too long to wait when there are problems. Take her to a vet asap

on again, off again limp

Hi Davies4,

Our now 2year old lab/retriever cross started doing the same thing when he was 8-10 months old. Even if he laid down for a few minutes, he wouldn't even put weight on his one rear leg when he stood up. We took him to the vet several times, had x-rays, checked for early hip dysplasia. We had him on anti-inflammatories for about 6 months, and now he seems to have "grown out of" the problem. Vet suggested it may have been something akin to growing pains....? He's great now -- goes for long walks and mountain bike rides (don't take them til 2 years old though) with no problems. Definately get her checked out (especially with that bump).

Thanks to mtbmonkey for your input; it's very appreciated. The limping seems to be lessening, but the "bump" is still there. The question is does the bump cause the limp? Our vet told us it was due to trauma, akin to a large water blister. It hasn't gone down and it looks worrisome. She has 2 more anti-inflammatories to take in this round then it's back to the vet for (?). I don't like having a 7 month old pup on all of these strong drugs, but todate we have no answers. As you said, possibly she will grow out of it...then I can stop worrying! Thanks again.
