Food Confusion
Alright, here is a question for all of you "food experts" out there.
I have noticed lately that Luba has been singing the praises for mashed potatoes for upset stomaches (and given her experience with rescue animals and her most recent experience with Sadie, I have to believe that it works) and I have also noticed that some foods are specifically formulated using potatoes. My confusion comes in since Oliver's breeder - who had me put him on raw with a little bit of kibble from day one - told me I could feed him any vegetables with the obvious exceptions (grapes, onions, etc.) and that I should not feed him potatoes. Not having any experience with raw diet before Oliver I accepted this advice at face value and without question - after all, she is the professional breeder who has been feeding this diet for years. Now, I am not asking this question for any other reason than to inquire if anyone out there knows why some breeders do not recommend potatoe? I don't think it is a carbs issue since she recommended rice on occasion. Is it a specific breed thing (Oliver is a Shiba) or is there some other reason? No emergency here, just curious Michelle and Oliver (who might one day get a potatoe!) |

Good question
Well some of the nightshade family including taters can give some dogs gas, but it's rare. I haven't heard nor had the displeasure of smelling any of that from any dog I've fed it to. Some dogs may just have allergies to night shade families and get sores around their mouth or itch but again, I've never seen it. These things I believe are rare. I heard a vet once say he thought that it caused dogs arthritis to become inflamed when feeding them night shade veggies but again, I've not seen any proof of that. HOWEVER if you are afraid of using potatoes introduce them slowly and see how your dog reacts. Here is a list of some other wonderful things you can feed your dog: beets broccoli carrots zucchini cauliflower celery Brussels sprouts cabbage sprouts squash sweet potatoes Swiss chard turnips parsley parsnips peas (& pods) pumpkin As for the breeder issue, I have no clue. Maybe your breeder had some bad experience with a dog and taters but I think it would be safe to say the situation is rare. Sadie has been getting potatoe for a couple of weeks now, with a diet of chicken, turkey and chicken livers, heart. I feed her red, green pepper with carrots, celery and she has had tomatoe as well (all organic veggies she shares mine with me) She's been healthy and gained a great deal of weight she lost when ill. She's growing like a weed and seems to completely enjoy her meals. This week I'm going to introduce egg to her diet.

I have no clue except what Luba says about nightshade vegetables possibly aggravating arthritis - and I really don't know is this is scientifically founded or just one of those things that gets spread around the intenet until people assume it's true...
What does you breeder say? Most people who are pretty rigid about raw feeding (I'm not one of them!) feel any grains are akin to poison, so I'm curious as to why she thinks rice is fine but not taters. For the record; I don't really feed any grains or potatoes to my dogs, for no other reason than I can't be bothered with the cooking and they appear to be doing quite well without them. PS Luba - ya giving your little cutie patootie any calcium in her diet? She needs that.

Luba and Carina, thanks for the responses. I think I will end up emailing my breeder to find out why to try to end this "confusion" Really it was only a question of curiosity since Oliver is 110% happy and healthy!
By the way Carina, Oliver only gets rice if I cook it for myself since I am also too lazy to do it for him - but grind up his little packets of raw with fruit and veggies with my meat grinder, that I do - and for the record, I'm a vegetarian so it makes it really fun!! Sometimes there really is no rational explanation for our behaviour is there Michelle |

Ha!
I'm not a vegetarian (oddly enough many people who feed raw are) but I eat little meat & try to buy organically raised when I do. Meanwhile there's a freezer full of dead animal parts in the garage for the dogs, while I have black bean burgers for dinner....

HI Carina sweetie
Yes she is getting her daily dose of calcium via the supplementation of her dry dog food and most and more importantly with her yogurt that I give her daily and she gets weekly beef bones to give a chew on that she loves. Can you suggest anything else that I may be missing out on. I also give her cod liver oil and weekly she gets some sardines which I think are really high in calcium from what I know.

Sounds good.
Fish oil is better; cod liver oil is high in A & D which can actually be harmful in the long term. Vit E helps with absorption of fish oil/omega 3. I also give my dogs canned fish - sardines, mackerel or salmon - 2-3 times a week. I squeeze a vit E cap over it. In fact that's what they had for breakfast this morning.

That sounds just yummie Carina
I am trying to add things slowly into her diet because she's so young and had such horrible intestinal infection. Glad to know I'm doin okay with the sardines. Fish oil I can get.... I was also going to do some research on the benefits of flax seed oil for dogs. I know for me, and I use it often. Have you heard of this being used for dogs?
