back-to-back breeding a bitch

Hello Everyone,

I would just like a few personal opinions on breeding a female dog two heats in a row. I have a 2 year old golden retreiver that just had a little of 9 beautiful puppies. I co-own her and unfortunately the other party has the breeding rights. Now I personally don't agree with back-to-back breeding if the female has more than 4 puppies. I would like some of your opinions so I can use them to try and convince the breeder out of doing a back to back breeding with my girl.
Thanks!

Ashley

It is my understanding that a bitch that is bred back to back has an increased risk of pyrometra, prolapsed uteris, and reproductive cancers.

No reputable breeder would ever do this, unless no puppies or maybe only one or two puppies survived from the last litter.. But whelping and nursing 9 puppies is hard on a bitch, and she should be rested.

Obviously this person cares nothing at all about the dog, and everything about the money.

Are you obligated to go along with something that is unethical and inhumane?

Do you have a good vet? Perhaps s/he can give you some really good info you can pass on the the co-owner; coming from a local vet this may be better received. Just a thought.

Not only is frequent breeding a terrible idea because it just helps fill shelters with unwanted animals in the long run, (there are thousands & thousands of pure bred dogs waiting death in shelters every day) but as noted it's also very bad for the bitch. ...pregnancy and nursing take a huge toll on her, and 5-6 months isn't nearly enough time to get back to peak condition.

Hopefully you can talk this person out of it...

I know how hard it was on me to have one child and less then two years later have another. Can you imagine a litter of 9 followed immediatly by another litter.
