My dog suffers from a terrible rash on her butt!
I have a 7 yr old Rat Terrier that has had constant skin problems for the last 2 yrs. Her butt will turn bright red and get really swollen, she spends 80% of her day spinning (on her butt)in circles on a rug or any semi-rough surface she can find. She also gets big red sores on her back legs and belly and eventually looses the hair in those areas. The vet says it is allergies and he gives her a steroid shot and prednisone pills and it seems to clear up the rash and give her some relief. The only problem is that it only last 3 or 4 weeks then i have to take her back to the vet for another shot and more pills. We have done this treatment for the past 2 years and I am starting to worry that all these meds will do more damage to her than good. I try to hold off as long as I can in between shots but after a few nights of laying in bed listening to her spin in circles on her butt all night, panting because she is so uncomfortable it kills me and I carry her back to the vet. I am still hopefully that maybe her problems could be from some other health problems that there is a cure for and not just allergies. Anybody got any advice for me or do you think the rest of her life will consist of monthly visits to the vet?

well, she is a little overweight. The vet put her on new weightloss food called Hill's prescription r/d last month but it hasn't helped her shed any extra lbs. and she acts like she is starving to death. He said if she didn't loose anything on it he might need to test her thyroid. maybe that will be the answer to some of her problems....

I would have the Thyrpid Test done now. Skin Rash can be an indication of an out of wack Thyroid. I would also suggest changing to a food with a short ingredient list, like one Protien and one Carb. Cut out any and all treats and see if the skin clears up. If it does slowly add back things one at a time to see what/if triggers the Rash. It can be a long process but if it works it's well worth it.
