Smile Another newbie

I was doing a little detective work and followed and email addy that led me here.

And I must say the information I have gleaned from this forum has been VERY enlightening.

This seems like a fun place and I think I'll stick around a while.

I live in Ontario and have 2 Great danes. I'm also the foster co-ordinator for Danes in Distress.

Hi and Welcome

Please post some pictures of your furbabies. My bf loves danes, he had a great dane/st.benard cross when he was growing up.

omg, they are gorgeous! Both are such lovely looking dogs. You are very lucky to have them. Were they rescues?

Unfortunately no, I bought them.

I got them as companions but with the intention of showing them. Lucas my fawn has wobblers (as well as a number of siblings) so he has been neutered. Zaire is just getting started, and we're going to stick to matches this summer for fun.

awww, poor fellow. When you say matches for Zaire, what do you mean? Sorry, not up on the showing scene.

Matches are "pretend" shows. So you don't earn any points, it's a way to practice with your dog without breaking the bank.

Don't worry I'm still learning this game myself.
Half the time I have no clue what I'm doing.

Thanks. That's a neat idea. I guess it runs along the lines of schooling shows in the horse world. I was asked if I would be interested in showing a Bouvier this past weekend but am not sure about having my first crack be at a national show. Maybe I can test drive at a match. I've until the end of september to figure it out so maybe I'll start going to some more local one's to see what it's all about first. Talk about throwing a newbie to the lions.

OMG I would die! I entered Zaire in 1 "real" show and I was a nervous wreck! That's why I'm sticking to matches until I can get my nerves under control.

A friend of mine went to a dogshow last year to watch and see the dachsunds (sp) and the breeder they were talking to got stuck in that both her dogs needed to go back in the ring at the same time and there was only 1 of her so my friend who'd NEVER even been to a dog show before in her life, went into the ring with one of her dogs!

lol, your friend is a brave soul. I'm thinking that a good stiff drink will be required prior to going in the ring or perhaps a sedative.

Hey everyone! Now that I know who this lovely lady is, I'd like to post HUGE cyberhugs for her- a true dane lover and advocate for caring/responsible pet ownership! (So don't worry- she's not someone else in disguise ).

lmao. I too know who she is and she's been described as a great lady by one of the DID Directors. So next time I'm in her neck of the woods delivering a Dane I'll have to meet her gang.

Welcome to the Board. I love, love, love great danes! Loved those pix too! I really tried to talk hubby into a dane since he wanted a dog that he knew would be big (most of our other dogs have been from the pound and none have ever been very big). He was on the web one day and found an altered picture of a Newfie in the back of a mini pickup - the photo made it look like the newf was bigger than the truck - and he hollered out "I found my dog!". I really love the newfs, but would've been perfectly happy with a dane!

I don't know what "wobblers" are. At first I thought of the long jowls wobbling, then just as quickly realized that wasn't what you meant. Your pups are gorgeous!

Hahaha, well my kids certainly have wobbly jowls! They are fabulous at flinging slingers up to the ceiling.

Wobblers Disease is one of many health problems in the breed. Basically there is a problem with the vertebrate in the neck. They don't grow properly and they put pressure on the spinal cord causing problems with walking.

Lucas is very lucky in that he's responding very well to chiropractic adjustments and a low dose of steroids. The only other options are accupuncture, gold bead implants, traditional surgery (which is very dangerous and no guarantee of complete recovery) or euthanasia.

2 of Lucas' littermates have the same disease, unfortunately one has already been euthanized. There are also a number of half siblings that have the disease as well.

So if you're looking for a fawn/brindle Dane in Ontario be very careful who you buy from and do not buy a dog that is related to mine!
