Open sores
I took in a stray/feral cat who had been attacked by another animal, and had damage to his foot. The foot healed ok, but since I've had him in a large cage, for quarantine, he developed a large sore that became abcessed, even thought he is taking an antibiotic. The vet prescribed continues antibiotic treatment, but he has developed two more of these quarter sized open red sores. There is also a drop of blood and a clump of fur (bloody on the tips) lying on the blanket next to him. The vet didn't know what caused this to happen. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would recomend having a feline leukemia/FIV test done. It's a virus that's passed from cat to cat by biting. It's very common in stray cats. This might be why he's not healing. His immune system may be compromised by the virus.

He had the FIV and leukemia tests in the office the first day I brought him in. The tests were negative, but something is definitely wrong. How accurate are the tests? He is also becoming more aggressive. I have to get him into the vet soon.
Do I have to be afraid of getting any illnesses from a scratch from this cat? |

I had him euthanized today. What a horrible experience. The vet thought he might have been suffering from meningitis from the bite wound that became abcessed. It was so upsetting.
