Dog Tags
Does anyone know if there is something I could coat on a dog license tags that wouldn't be harmful to them or their skin?
I don't know who manufactures these tags now but poor Mollie's white fur under her neck is grey and discoloured and her fur feels very coarse and not pleasant to the touch. I'm assuming it would be whatever aluminum or metal they are using and never had this problem from a year ago. Unfortunately, the tags must be worn and displayed at all times in our quaint town. Thanks for reading.

Could you put a coat of clear nail polish over them? I know people who do that for earrings when they have metal allergies. Once it's dry it should be pretty inert... And if you need to, it's easy enough to reapply...

Hi,
Perhaps you could call the people at city hall in your quaint town and explain the situation, about your dog having a reaction to the medal! Perhaps you are not the only one with this problem... If you are planning a vet visit soon, maybe mention it to your vet, and perhaps he could sign a letter stating that your dog is allergic to the medal and cannot wear it constantly... If the medals are delivered by the city and cause your pet health problems, they should be made aware of it. sandyrivers

D O G, they make little cloth pockets that you can put the tags in. Take a look at Outward Hound. These will keep the metal away from her coat and quiet them.

I was reading up on the clear nail polish Hazel but I think it would be best to get a clear one without formaldehyde..you think?
Laminating is also a possibility Masha but not sure if the tag would be too thick to run through a laminator or not. They will be having a vet visit soon sandyrivers and will defininately pose the question with my vet. Great idea. I was researching stuff last night pbpatti and also came across these neoprene things that wrap around the edge of the tags. They were pretty cool and thought maybe I could rig something up? Thanks for the positive suggestions folks. I may try the non-formaldehyde nail polish while rigging up a protective cover.

I never use nail polish so I'm clueless about the formaldehyde question, DOG. It does sound like it would be a good thing, though, if you can find some without.

Just an idea - heavy clear tape like shipping/parcel tape? Wrap both sides. You may have to swap out if it gets ratty or torn.

something simple!
Hi,
Until you check with your vet, why don't you just put the medal on a small ''snap''... This way, you snap it on the collar when you go outside, and remove it when you are inside? When not in use, you can snap the medal on the leash, so you don't lose it! And it's at hand when you go out! I doubt the city inspectors will visit dogs in their homes to see if they are wearing the medals inside!!! Of course, I would do this only, and only if there is no chance of your dog escaping, like if you live in a building. Because it would be terrible if she escaped without her medal... The dollar store also sells these plastic things made to plastify id cards and photos, you could use this is the meantime, they sell 6 for a buck! sandyrivers.

Sadly enough Sandyriver, both dogs have their tags on snap rings and aren't on them all day.
I had a bunch of old lanyards lying around and I tore off the old ID tags and kept the rings specifically for their tags. I found it easier to take them (tags) on & off between home collars and walking collars. The metal hasn't affected our Springer, Gryphon and he has a neck full of white fur, it's just affecting our white setter, Mollie.
