How long can I keep open tin of wet food?

Joshie got really sick yesterday, he had a severe case of diarrhea and vomiting, he couldn't even hold the water. Thank God the worst is over, I gave him bread and chicken broth and so far he was holding his food.

I think it's actually my fault. For the last few months I used to give him a few spoons of good wet (grain free) food on top of his kibble. So the tin of wet food could last for three - four days. I usually transfer the food into the dish and keep it in the fridge. ( I wish I could give him the whole tin, but he doesn't tolerate wet food more than in 1/4 ratio).

Could it be that the food went bad in the fridge? Can the open wet food be stored at all?

I am trying to figure out what was wrong with him yesterday and would really appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks

I usually don't use open canned food after about 2 days, but I'd be surprised if there was enough bacteria in 3-4 days to have caused food poisoning in your dog. Hard to say for sure though. In the future, perhaps you can freeze some of the unused portions of a can and feed it later. Old ice-cube trays work great for this, then you can plop the frozen cubes in a bag and thaw portions as needed, with less wastage.

Thank you so much for a great suggestion. I'll also try to get smaller size cans. Joshie is doing well so far, so

Thanks again.

If Josh doesn't tolerate canned food why even give it to him at all?

If you want to add something I would suggest a little leftover meat from your own meals. Also, most dogs love yogurt....make sure it is the plain type with only milk ingredients and active bacterial cultures and nothing else added.

Just a reminder to wash those food & water dishes out often.
