Seized Dogs...Can You Help??

November 22, 2004, 9 dogs were seized in Halton Hills. These large dogs are looking for a foster home. If you can help them out please call 519-833-2287 or email volunteer@uppercredit.com Thank you, foster-in-ontario

Released to the public: Novemeber 26th, 2004

Homes for nine dogs rescued from deplorable conditions at a rural Halton Hills property are being sought by the Upper Credit Humane Society.

Robert Burr, the humane society's general manager, said the dogs-lab/pointer/hound crosses-were rescued last Wednesday and Friday from a 10' by 10' metal structure. The walls of the building were solid and the dogs could only peer out through a small opening elevated from the ground. The only access they had to the outside was a 10'x10' outdoor area attached to the structure.

"It was absolutely covered with dog feces, as were the dogs," said Burr.

Halton Police alerted the humane society to the fact the dogs were being kept in filthy conditions, said Burr.

He added the owner of the dogs was co-operative with the humane society and is not facing any charges as it was a case of animal hoarding due to psychological problems. The owner was providing food and water to the dogs.

Burr said they will check on the man three or four times a year to make sure he's not hoarding animals again.

In all, the humane society rescued 11 dogs from the property and took them to the vet to be examined and vaccinated.

"Overall they were in pretty good shape," said Burr, however, a couple needed medication for minor problems.

He also said two of the older dogs had to be euthanized because they were vicious, but the other nine "are showing no signs of being vicious at all."

"They're all really people friendly," he said. "They are happy and loving dogs."

He said it was obvious the dogs, ranging in age from eight months to four years, have never been walked on a leash and they had to end up carrying them out of the building to the humane society vehicles. Initially they were all very shy, he said.

After a visit to the vet the dogs (four males and five females) were taken to the dog groomer, where they were cleaned up, and they are now awaiting adoption or foster homes from the Upper Credit Humane Society.

Since arriving at the shelter Burr said the dogs are "coming around beautifully."

The dogs are playing, enjoying their new environment and the chance to run outside.

"Some are starting to walk on leashes," Burr said.

He said, likely due to the fact they were confined for so long, they have a strange way of running, like trotting horses.

The dogs are not house-trained but Burr said they are being clean in their kennels and he doesn't believe there will be a problem training them.

The dogs are being spayed and neutered and are ready for adoption or to go to temporary foster homes.

Anyone interested in volunteering to walk the dogs are also needed.

The Upper Credit Humane Society, located at the southeast corner of Trafalgar Rd. N. and Wellington Rd. 124 in Erin, is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
