Angry Cat refuses to #2 in litter box!

I recently adoped a 2 year old male cat about 3 months ago. We have had no problems with him at all until about 2 weeks ago, when he began to routinely go #2 directly NEXT to his litter box. He still pees inside the box, and will occasionally poop in it as well. I use the clumping litter and have always cleaned out his messes each day, and I make sure to completely change the litter and bag once a week. We are affectionate with him, there have been no major changes in his routine, and I can't seem to get him to stop doing this!!! We have rearranged the placement of his box, etc. and nothing is working. HELP!

If this just started, I would have him checked out at the vet as a first step. This is always a good idea in the case of sudden changes in behavior like this.

Where did you get him? It's possible he may need deworming. Was he a stray?

If he's okay, I would try giving him two litterboxes.
