Interesting read GF. Not sure what to make of it myself, but will have to sit down and read it again later. Having had a large breed dog with dysplasia it makes me wonder. I know with Nikki he'll be done later, Lupa we were planning early.

I am careful about Marty getting too close, I am concerned with the why the dog was not neutered. Some people like to see their dog attack another dog. |

It's really only in the States and Canada that the idea of spaying/neutering is a form of pet population. In Europe, as stated, neutering isn't as common at all and I don't think they have the overpopulation problem like we do here.. interesting..
Loki isn't neutered (he was shown in CKC to his championship), and honestly, I don't think we will neuter him at this point (still to be discussed with the breeder). We have zero plans in breeding him, but I don't see any added benefit of neutering at this point. He is an amazing dog temperament wise, has never once marked in the house - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That said - any female dog I would have would certainly be spayed. The risk of pyometra scares me far too much. |

This corroborates and extends our information that neuter is not all good and has several risks and negatives. What I see new in this is more depth of research on the age of neuter. This says age at neuter is important, more negatives were seen in dogs done young than older. But it clarifies that neuter at any age can be deletorious to health with more consequences noted in dogs neutered at any age than in dogs left intact.
Anybody who would like to read about research to date can check out the links below. I always find the Duffy and Serpell one on behaviour, using CBARQ, fascinating. MORE aggression noted in neutered dogs than in intact. Especially in girls. Differences by gender and by breed are noted in that article. I highlighted that one in red so folks can find it. Amazing stuff in it. This is a reading list of articles and papers by Veterinarians, breed clubs, trainers and others on the pros and cons of neutering or spaying your dog that I have found helpful and very educational. Most are based on extensive Veterinary research and also provide references you can check further. If you are wrestling with the question of when or whether to neuter/spay these may help. They do not all agree and one is even a rebuttal of another. One is a link to a radio show interview. One is a link to a medical testosterone suppressant not yet available in N. America but is in the U.K. and Australia. Some are not easy reading. I think I personally found the first two in the list to be of most help and I appreciated the non-biased way the information was presented. The list is in no particular order, articles were simply added as I discovered them. If the links are not clickable I have tried to include the name of the paper and author in case you have to search for them. I hope this helps folks out and good luck with your decision. A tip, I went to my Vet to discuss the first two articles with her. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf Long-Term Health Risks and Benefits Associated with Spay / Neuter in Dogs Laura J.
