Sadie's got Chronic Diarrhea ???
Okay Sadie's just over 2 months old a collie cross female rescued from unknown but probably not good living conditions.
Was fine in foster care up until the last two days before we adopted her. She began to have diarrhea. Today marks a week of very loose liquidy frequent diarrhea episodes. She has been on Flagyl for almost a week Her food is being pureed on a very strict gastro diet First it was Medical Gastro puree'd with rice and cottage cheese Vet now suggested we add some pureed pasta (done) Thought we had started to see some improvement but we're back at step #1 again. She's also taking small amount of pepto bismol caplet to help stop the diarrhea but it's not doing good. Parvo test negative had panacure 2X while in foster care parasitology tests came back negative WHAT COULD THIS BE?? She's going back to the vet hopefully tomorrow morning. She's thinking of adding a second antibiotic to her schedule. She is alert, happy , playful and has an appetite. I'm sure the vet will run more tests but if anyone can offer some addional thoughts/advise I'd greatly appreciate it! Luba and Sadie

What is she taking the Flagyl for? One of the side effects of this med is diarrhea.....

Agree with LR...I'd be cautious about putting a young pup on too many meds without a clear need for it.
Pumpkin (plain, not the pie filling) can work wonders for diarrhea, many vets will even suggest this. Here's an awesome site; scroll down for some ideas for diarrhea: http://www.bowchow.com/specific.html Give that cute pup an extra hug from me!!

Lizzy who had chronic diareha (sp? lol) had to be put on 2 different antibiotics. The vet said that once it gets a hold it's hard to get rid of.
Question about the pumkin...what makes it work? Do you buy canned or make your own? Biggy huge doggy hugs to Sadie |

I had concern about flagyl causing the diarrhea as well. I know it does in 'humans' so I did a net search and very very very few people have indicated that it does in dogs (which coincides with what my vet told me...I mentioned that to her too)
However long term can cause some neuro problems if taken over an extended period of time. She was put on the flagyl before we got her because she had chronic diarrhea for over a day. The vet also suggested, as stated here that she may need a secondary antibiotic if this doesn't clear up. Believe me, I am cautious and wary...myself I treat most of my problems herbally and organically. I just dont' wanna take a chance with her because she is so young...so I'm doing strictly what the vet says. After the antibiotics I'm going to start adding yogurt to her diet to increase her good bacteria level. This morning she's had one movement and it started out custard-like but ended on a trying to form consistency. Only one poop in four hours so far, two meals and thats pretty good so far today. Pumpkin....now there is a remedy I heard of before!!! Gonna get some at the store today!!! Can't do any harm I'm sure esp if I introduce it slowly. THX sooo much for your advise and support! I'll keep you updated Luba and Sadie

Just thinking out loud here, Luba, but - every collie and collie mix owner I've spoken with ( my own last dog who was part collie) says their dogs have sensitive stomachs.
My own dog would get diarrhea if he had one unusual thing to eat, or even if there was a thunderstorm! He was like this all of his life. Long fur and diarrhea - what a combination. |

Funny you say that LR cause my collie when I was younger had intestinal troubles as he got older!
I added pasta to her diet and so far it's 8:30 pm and she's gone (2) times...one sorta loose and the second pretty formed I jumped around the house! LOL What a nut, happy about poop huh! LMAO...the mothers of the world know what I mean!

Yay for firmer poops!
Canned pumpkin is great, but the plain pumpkin, not the "pie filling."

I know for my kids (human ones) I give them jello, that hasn't set up yet. When you mix the hot water and stir, don't add the cool water. Just let it cool down, and then let them drink. This helps to settle the stomach, helps control vomitting and loose bowel movements. (we have to do this a lot as my son has a sensitive stomach.) Never tried it in dogs, so you might ask the vet if it is okay, but I wouldn't think it would hurt!

Well we had a really rough couple of days but as of yesterday she started to improve quite nicely. THANK GOD! Poor thing was sooo sick.
We are waiting for some test results to come back now, but she is eating and drinking and things coming out are looking much much better. I didn't sleep for almost three days! Thanks for all your concern and support...Sadie's a lucky gal! I'm so happy she's feeling better today. I'm beginning to think she's got some husky in her...the edges of her eyes are blue and her iris's are dark dark Elizabeth Taylor blue...midnight blue'ish! So very pretty.

Well, it didn't take her long to make herself comfy on the couch now did it! I love to see dogs spread out like that, or when they do the froggy leg thing!
