Mom and kittens

My Mom and Dad noticed the other day, a Mom and her kittens were living under our deck.
Since the weather was getting cold, we all decided to try to
capture them.
Right now we have Mom and 4 of her kittens. There are still 2 kittens to get.
We are afraid that the Mom took the other 2 and hid them somewhere else.
The 2 kittens haven't been seen today.
We are going to possible keep the Mom cat and 2 of the kittens, my Mom might take the other. If not we will adopt them out.

We hope that the other 2 kittens will appear. We usually see them in the afternoon. I hope they appear.

I hope they are not dead.

The Mom and the 4 kittens are safe in my Mom's house for now.

You can probably borrow or rent a humane trap from the Humane Society, or a tool rental place.

Put the trap in the last place you saw the kittens, and put something really smelly, like canned salmon in it. Hopefully, this will work!

Good luck!

I wonder if you put a harness on the mama cat and take her outside she may lead you to the kittens or she may call to them.
I'm not sure how cats work that way but it may be worth a try

You may want to be careful if you have other pets yourself, the mama and kittens could harbour parasites that could make other pets ill.

Yes, we did get a trap. They seemed to be to smart to go in the trap.
It is still there with some good canned food. So, if the last 2 are sleeping, when they wake, hopefully they will go in the trap and then we can reunite them with the rest of their family.

That is a good thought about the harness, but it took us over 2 days to get mama cat. She is very smart and if she got away from us, we may never get her back.
Right now, momma cat and 4 of her kittens are safe in my parents house. They are in 2 big cat carriers with blankets in with them. Momma cat is able to look through the cat carrier and see her babies.

Come on you last 2 kittens, appear.

We also had some heavy rain last night and I hope they didn't drown.

Well bless your hearts for taking in the mom & kittens.

How old are the kittens? Cats & even little kittens are pretty smart, so I'm sure they were able to find a way to stay dry...keep trying with the trap, if they're around and they get hungry enough they may still take the bait.

Let us know how they're getting along & I will keep my fingers crossed for the two escapee kittens.

The moma and the 4 kittens we got are doing fine in our basement bathroom. This room is where we usually house found cats or cats we get. It's like a nursery. Well the kittens are eating good and playing with each other. The mother cat is also eating good and still alittle cautious around us.

I was out again today for over 1hour trying to find the other 2 kittens but no luck. We even got our neighbors to look.

Wouldn't you think you could see the kittens, one is grey and the other is black and white.

The trap is still out with good food in it so I hope if they are still alive they will smell it out and go in the trap.

I am afraid because tonight its supposed to be in the low 20's temp wise.

Keep praying we can get the two lost kittens.

You have certainly done more for these cats than most people would, and it's a sad fact that we can't save them all. Maybe other people took in the remaining two kittens.

I must tell you that the mother cat is probably pregnant again, so I would suggest you have her spayed ASAP!

What to you mean she is pregnant again? She doesn't look like she is. She is still watching the 4 kittens.
We are going to have her fixed. We beleive in that. All are animals are fixed.

Cats can go into heat and get pregnant when their kittens are less than one month old.

A cat will often not even look pregnant until she's ready to give birth. I recently trapped a cat who was still nursing her kittens. When I took her in to be spayed, it was found that she was pregnant with 5 kittens.

The fact that your cat is still feeding her kittens does not mean she is not pregnant, and if she was outside until recently, odds are that she is.
So unless you want another litter, act now.

Not to go back and forth on this. She is not pregnant again.
We checked her belly and we didn't feel anything in there.

I'm just telling you facts. Even a vet can't tell if a cat is in the early stages of pregnancy, so for sure you can't.

The odds are very high that she is preg and if you wait, you are risking another litter of kittens. If you plan to spay her anyway, why not now?

We are going to spay her. We just need to let things settle for awhile. The momma cat won't even let us pet her. We need to gain her trust.
Plus, there is no Tomcat around.

It is the tomcat that kills the babies and then the act is done and she has another liter. None of this happened.

I think the original owner found out the cat was pregnant and dump the cat in our yard.

We have no other cats around our neighborhood.

This is the last thing I am writing on this thread.

Fine. I'm not the one who is going to have to deal with a possible litter.

But I must correct your misinformation, for anyone else who might be in your situation - I do know a little about this.

It is the tomcat that kills the babies and then the act is done and she has another liter.

Not true. It does not matter if a tomcat (or anything else) kills the litter. The female can come into heat and get pregnant in as little as 3 weeks after giving birth, even if she is still lactating and nursing kittens.

We have no other cats around our neighborhood.

Even if neighbours do not own intact tomcats, they will come great distances to look for a female in heat, mate with her and then leave. So not seeing tomcats does not mean there are none anywhere.

I think the original owner found out the cat was pregnant and dump the cat in our yard

She could have gotten pregnant before she was dumped in your yard. There were obviously tomcats in the area she came from.

And again, there is NO WAY to tell if a cat is pregnant early on. How she looks or feels is absolutely no indication.

The end.

Dear TomCat

I have to agree with Lucky Rescue, you see it is impossible to tell by feel if the mama would be pregnant again.

It may take several weeks for even an experienced vet to feel the so called 'string of pearls' lol or 'beads'

You are doing a wonderful job, and I commend you for the love and kindness you are showing this cat and her little kittens. Keep up the good work.

May God Bless you.

Luba

I have to again disagree with you. The momma cat is not pregnant again.
She is not in heat and she is still too young to be spayed.
She is only about 7months old.

BUT we will get her spayed as soon as everything settles down.

P.S. The four kitties are so cute.

Yet more wrong information I have to correct.

Cats can be spayed at 8 weeks if necessary. Most cats come into heat by 6 months old, and should be spayed prior to the first heat.

And if a cat is old enough to have a litter, she's certainly old enough to be spayed!

Cats do not come into heat if they are pregnant. A queen (intact female) who does not come into heat is *probably* pregnant. She may not be, but I would never wait and take a chance.

Again - intact females will be in heat nearly continuously - off and off - until or unless they are bred or spayed.

Like it or not, those are the facts. I didn't make them up and I fail to understand why facts would make someone angry.

Hello friendly folks

I don't think anyone is saying for sure she is preggos
but there is a chance, and TomCat sure she may seem young but thats okay they do spay cats early. They actually recover quite nicely.

How are they behaving themselves today?

When I left this morning for work. They were all on our cat bed curled up together in our bathroom nursery.

Last night they were playing and momma looked like she needed to be away from them.

I put her up on the window ledge so she could have some space. but where she can still keep an eye on them.

They have been using the litter box real well and eating good.

We took the Momma and her kittens to our vet yesterday for
a checkup.
We have names for them now... Momma is Mystic
We have 2 boys and 2 girl kittens!
The 2 girl names are: Rasberry Blue she is a blue color kitten
and Sierria.

The 2 boy names are: Cosmo and Blaze.

They are all ok. They got all their shots that where needed.
The kittens are about 7wks old Mystic is about 2yrs old.

They are negative for feline lukemia.

And on Tuesday Mystic is going in to be spayed.

Our vet couldn't feel any babies in her.

Our vet did say that this wasn't the first litter for Mystic. She probably had a few.

Our vet told us that the babies are old enough to be separated from Momma. SO, we set up one of our greyhound dog crates and made it nice for the kittens and we are keeping Mystic in the bathroom nursery for at least half the day.

We put the kittens back with Mystic at night.

Our vet said that Mystic needs some time alone to rest. She looked worn out.

We took pictures and I will post them hopefully tonight.

Some good news. The 2 kittens we were looking for and couldn't find. Well, we read in our local paper that there were two found kittens near a dumpster, taken in and adopted to a person who works for an area cat rescue. They mentioned the kittens colors, 1 black and white kitten, 1 grey stripped kitten.
My wife is going to call the person who got them and find out for sure, but we know that they are the ones we were looking for.

They were found about a mile from where my parents live.

We are all so happy with this news.

I must appalaud you for what you and your family have done. Not everyone would have done that. You save Mamma and her babies from what could have been death. And yes,now they do fix them at an early age.As early as 8 weeks. We adopted a kitted at 8 weeks and he was fixed before we could take him home. And trust me they can get pregnant even if the babies are 3 weeks. My sister is on a farm.My nephew kept bringing kittens from the barn. And mamma too.Kittens were about 4 weeks and sure enough mamma was pregnant again.Males won't kill the babies to get her in heat agin. That is for Lions. They do that.Once again.I applaud you for what you and your family did.

They all have a vet appt tomorrow for a checkup and any shots needed. We will probably make an appt for the 2 kittens we are keeping.
We think my sister is taking the other 2.

They are all doing great. Mom is still alittle defensive but getting better. They are all eating well.
