The woman upstairs from me has a 12 year old dachshund who I was convinced had hearing loss sometimes it would not even look at her owner when called or make any notice. The woman insisted it was selective hearing and I was skeptical until the lady called the dog after she wandered about 3 houses down and the little dog definitely heard (and ignored) her call.
I think stubbornness is a trait of the breed.
