I need a humane way to keep the kitties out of my mulch along my pond please...

For those that don't know I care for a colony in my yard and I give them free run along with being the most spoiled *ss feral's in the world. But I also have a pond that I love and I need a way to keep the kitties from doing their business in the mulch along my pond. Does anyone know of a way to keep them out of that area that won't impact them or the fish??? Thanks

Bill
PS I am not mean they have the run of the rest of the yard I just want to keep the pond area cleaner especially since it's right next to my patio.

Hi Bill

I wonder if moth balls would work? I also brush my dogs hair throughout the yard to keep any critters away. I have heard many dont like the smell of another animals hair or human hair?

Hope your having a good day! How are all those kitties doing? I know things have been tough lately...

Cindy

Moth balls are poisonous to animals. I had the same problems with my feral extended family. I ended up buying a commercial cat deterrent and spraying once a day and eventually they stopped. I found this product online:

Shake-Away claims to be the "strongest cat deterrent in nature," and I have to agree, judging by the ingredients. Shake-Away is a granular substance with the odor of fox and coyote urine. Even territorial cats are smart enough to stay away from areas previously marked by much larger predators. One 20 ounce bottle will cover as much as 600 linear feet. Shake-Away is non-toxic to humans, animals, and flora. Like the "real thing," applications should be repeated over time or after heavy rain.

Thank you both I will call the Shake-Away company tomorrow just to make sure that it will only deter them from the area around the pond I don't want to deter them from my yard because as long as I have it (And God willing it will be a long time but lately who knows?) so will they. And I also want to make sure about the pond water a lot of things can throw off the balance and I get a lot of pleasure from my fish too.

ok your might not like this one but a lot of feral mammals will stay away from human urine

also pepper sauce is good though i cant sya what it will do to your mulch

Why not just regard it as a big litter box and clean it once a day>

one of these days i gotta come out and see your place it sounds like heaven

I would also recommend giving the motion activated sprinklers a try.

Mulch around a pond isn't a good idea anyway. If it gets blown into the pond or washed in with rain, it can cause it's own problems. Mulch with pea gravel around your pond, better for the pond and you'll likely have less trouble with the cats too.

Lots of great ideas! I need to remember those myself.
There is also a plant called "Scardy Cat". It is supposed to help keep them away from areas you don't want touched. It smell skunky to them. It does have a pungent odour but it's not that bad. Maybe also a clump of hyssop? It has a very strong odour cats don't like. The Scardy Cat is an annual up here but may be a perennial there. You can do cuttings with it too to overwinter it. The hyssop is a perennial.

@ Jim Hall it's not as nice as I'd want it to be but it's my little heaven I just wish the pond was bigger but I am happy for what I have.
@ clm I only have mulch around part of it and I have pea gravel around the rest as you can see here are some pics if you want to see them of the colony and the pond...

And here is a teaser one of the pond....

And thanks everyone for the suggestions again the main thing is I don't want the cats to be put off from coming here just put of from going there
