Dog has crusty sores/pustules(pics)!! plz need advice

I have taken my dog to the vet, intially he had hot spots so i was given 40 pills of cephalexin 500mg along with itching meds, now after completing this and fixing that issue he has this sores around his butt right above his tail and some on his back legs nothing really towards the front. He is fine, plays fine. My vet gave me another 40 of the same pill along with itching meds. He said sometimes it takes 2-3 months of the antibolitcs to fix the issue. He did have and issue in the past regarding a skin infection. I know its hard to diagnose online. the first time he gave a different pill i think it was prednisone(big white pill) if im not mistaking and that basically saved his life but that time it was pretty severe and i had taken him to 3 different vets that didnt do any good.

Chocolate lab aussie shepherd mix. about 3 years old. mostly outside dog. but has been in since the issue. in FL

but now he has this.......and he is being treated with cephalexin.

have you noticed that they only appear at certain times or is this all year round? I know some dogs have reactions to the flea control treatments and it usually rears its ugly head around the butt and tail and legs?

Has the doggie been tested for mites? or mange? poor thing! the presdnisone usually is quick acting and works well but I wouldnt want to use it long term if possible.

Can I ask what you feed your dog? sometimes allergys can be with food? My chocolate lab had several skin issues until I gave him a higher quality diet.

The reason I asked about allergies is that my Cocker Spaneil Lady has them and that's what they look like. If we don't keep on top of the allergies with an antihistamine, she gets those kinds of spots that progress to a skin infection because she's licking and scratching at them. Lady's allergies are contact so she gets the spots on parts of her body directly in contact with the environment, ususally her belly and lower legs. She squats very low to the ground to do her "thing". Perhaps you should consider allergy testing. The trial and error method can be very frustrating.

Exclamation I know it's been a while...

I don't know if you are still active on here or if you will even see this. My dog has the exact sores your dog had. She is a 7 month old Pitbull. She started with just a couple of sores on her neck and shoulder, then when one went away (seemingly) a ton spread over her shoulder, and now down her back to her hips. She has red spots on her belly, and the same irritation on her elbows and the heels on her hind legs. I took her to the vet today and got the same antibiotic you did. Cephalexin. I have the paste though, and instructions to give her 4milligrams a day for 15 days. I have given her one dose so far so obviously we haven't seen any results. I was owndering though how your dog ended up. If your dog recovered and the medicine worked? I am worried about my little girl and am terrified that this isn't going to solve our problem. I really just don't want to be one of those people who is in and out of the vet constantly with their dog suffering through trial and error of medications. If you could help me at all, I would really really appreciate it!

Sincerely
K

C-Kat,
These sores must be caused by something in the environment. I have 5 Jack Russells. 2 of them have begun showing these same sores in the past couple of months. 3 of my youngest dogs eat Blue Buffalo kibble. One is really old (16) and on prescription diet. One of the younger dogs has had several single sores on her back which I've been treating with topical antibiotics. It will dry up, leave a bump and hairless spot. Then another will show up in another place. My 13 year old only eats homemade food...no kibble she can't digest it. She too is now showing these sores. Hers seem to itch more than hurt. Where as the other dog has pain and itch. Aside from these sores, both dogs are healthy and happy and act like fools, just like terriers do!!
It's interesting that another one of my dogs seems to smell the onset of these sores. She will start to sniff Natasha or Dilly's back, then lick/chew at one spot. When I look closely, I can see a new bump beginning which will turn into a sore and I can start to treat it right away.
Seems like this "sore problem" is a growing problem everywhere from what I have found doing research on the web. If I find anything new, I will post it.
Hope you have found something to work for you.

I would check to see if you need to give your dog any yogurt or probiotics if he has to be on antibiotics for so long. Antibiotics can give dogs a yeast infection. I hope he will get better fast.

Unhappy Similar reactions

Hi I came across this while looking for answers to what is going on with my dog and found it strange just how similar the reactions are. My dog is a pit bull/shar pei mix and was on cephalexon for an entire year until it stopped working. Now she has broken out but it is worse than before. She has the spots on her elbows and pustules all over her back, neck and belly. I was wondering if you ever found out what it is that your dog has and if you could ever find something that worked.

Have you worked with a dermatologist? Was a skin test done and was a culture performed? A year is a long time, since resistance is often likely to happen, and ceph is really rough on the digestive tract in terms of the flora.

Have you been doing any baths, etc?
