City of Toronto: adoption fee waived for black cats

Woooo Hoooo!!!!!!

Black Friday Weekend Special!
Quote:

The City of Toronto is holding a cat adoption blitz in honour of Black Friday from Friday, November 29 to Sunday, December 1. Residents can go home with a kitten or cat with any black colouring, without paying the usual $75 adoption fee (there is a $15 pet licence fee or $7.50 for seniors).

More than 150 cats are up for adoption at the City’s four animal shelters, as well as at a number of adoption partner locations.

All cats and kittens are sterilized (spayed/neutered), micro-chipped, vet-checked, de-wormed and vaccinated.

Approximately 210 cats and kittens were adopted during the recent Fall in Love adoption campaign across the city. There is still an immediate need to find homes for more than 150 cats and kittens. Black cats are traditionally the last to find permanent homes.

An animal shelter in my state does not like to adopt out black cats during a holiday as people use them in rituals . My daughter and her family where adopting a black cat around Christmas time and the person at the shelter told my daughter people will kill black cats in rituals , so I feel this is not such great idea .

Black Friday is not a holiday--it's just a busy shopping day. Halloween would be another story

I think the Black Friday promotion is a great idea! Gives the kitty a chance to get used to the house before all the hubbub of the holidays starts, and helps make room at the shelter.

What a great idea. Black cats are the best. Not doing it with black dogs too?

It's around the holidays , my daughter and family was adopting their black cat around Christmas time . The shelter said they do not like adopting out black cats 'around' holidays. I totally disagree with this idea for a numbers of reasons . People will also think giving a person a kitten for gift is a cute idea. The person getting the 'gift' may not feel the same way. If a person want to get a kitten this time of year it would best to wait until all the holidays are over. Too many people will coming and going and it would easy for a very small frighten kitten to escape outside without anyone knowing it.
I am thinking about is what best for the kitten . There is not any thumb down to give.

Knowledgeable
shelter/rescue professionals obviously think differently.......

There will always be risks associated with the types of concerns you have raised........and, that's why responsible, experienced rescue organizations have thorough screening processes in place to evaluate potential adoption applications.......they are no fools, haphazardly handing out these little ones.

In responsible animal shelters, the "gifting" of an animal is an automatic 'red light' in an adoption screening process.

The 'busy-ness' of the season itself - the potential for a cat to "escape" - these are issues which are, again, covered off by knowledgeable organizations through standard, pre-adoption preparation guidelines and adopter education practices.......and, many of these risks are not exclusive to the Christmas season!

All life's activities come with some degree of risk......but, we don't recluse ourselves.......we MANAGE RISK.

If you noticed I said around holidays , this mean any holiday. And people that want to use a black cat in a ritual are surely not going to be honest .
People with the best of intention do forget to close a door and during the busy holiday season most people have people coming and going . The shelter I am talking about is on of the best run shelter but they're in Salem Massauchettes and there some people very into rituals , so the shelter is very concerned about people wanting a black cat at any holiday . I disagree with you and let agree that is OK to disagree and leave like that.

And they're also not going to go through the hassle of filling out forms and paying the licensing or adoption fees that are the norm when adopting from a shelter or rescue organization. They're going to get a kitten for free from an ad (Kijiji or whatever). No questions asked.

Besides, way more cats are killed every day in the "shelters" that are supposed to be saving them than will ever be killed by a few whackos in a ritual. I think it's totally misguided for a shelter to halt adoptions on that premise. How many cats did they then kill because they couldn't find homes for them?
