Travelling with dog on plane...

So we are tentatively planning a short plane trip with WestJet next month...flight would be about an hour and a half direct. I am going to take my dog who is a schnoodle and because of his height would be too big to take in cabin. I am nervous about him flying underneath in cargo as I am worried he will be really stressed.

Any words of wisdom, experiences, etc.? I am imagining all these worse case scenarios in my head of things that could happen.

Thanks kindly!

Hi highwood and welcome!

First thing would be to call Westjet to make 100% sure they will allow your dooger on the plane at that time of year. Some airlines have restrictions.

I know that many vets will offer up a sedative for dooger for the flight in cases like this...
Hope others have additional ideas for you

Highwood, I am not a big fan of flying pets in cargo, because yes, as you are worried about, things do happen. That said, just over a year ago I flew two puppies from Ontario to Vancouver with WestJet, and it all went very well. The people were great, very understanding as I stood and paced waiting for them to come to us. I would assume since it's a short trip that it will not have any stops, that is good. I would try to do direct flights only. Make sure the dog has water before the flight and take him/her out to do business and all should be well. Be prepared for a messy crate just in case, I had clean towels, wet towels in case I needed to do a quick clean up, etc. The puppies were clean for 8 hours from kennel to freedom, so your should do fine. If you are super worried about stress ask your vet for a mild sedative, not enough to knock the pup out, just to relax him. Or try Rescue Remedy for a few days prior to the flight. Good luck and try not to stress about it. Your dog will pick up on your nervous energy and it won't help.

Great..thanks! Yes westjet does allow them in cargo this time of year. The flight is from Edmonton to Regina direct.

If I went with Air Canada he would be allowed in cabin however the flight times are not as good and I think he might be just as stressed being in a soft sided carrier he is not as used to. I have an image of him the whole time trying to escape from his carrier under the seat and whining and barking.
