13 year old dog tied outside
This is a long shot here but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in offering a "retirement" home for an older Keeshound mix. She has lived her entire life tied to a dog house in a driveway where nobody lives!! The elderly man who owned her passed away a few years ago and the house remains empty to this day. Someone comes over to feed the dog daily but other than that she is left alone all the time. The deceased man's children keep the dog there so the house looks lived-in. I think I can persuade them to give her up if I can find a home for her. My sis and I went to get her today so we can bring her to our shop to groom her to relieve her of all her dead undercoat and mats. She is a real sweety. I know her chances are slim because of her age but I thought I would post anyways. She is really small, maybe about 25 pounds.

Ohhh! The old ones always break my heart the most!! Do you know if she is spayed and possibly up to date with vaccinations?
(not that I'd vaccinate her anymore at 13, mind you, maybe just for rabies.... 13!! 13?? Poor thing! Nice of you to take the initiative to care for her and to post.

Are you kidding me? How long has the community known about this and let this go on? Who is this someone that comes over to feed the dog, what is their relation to the family?
Try contacting the keeshond rescue contacts for Ontario I didn't find any for Quebec: T DeRuyte cbell@cogeco.ca E Gilmer keewords@darwood.ca

No, I am not kidding you, Luba. I have only known about this dog for the last two weeks and feel really, really bad about not taking her into my home; I have, at least, tried to make her life more comfortable by bringing her a clean bed and blankets that I change, pushing her doghouse over so she can at least lay on the grass, etc. but what she needs most is companionship. As you know, most communties don't give a hoot about dogs being tied up 24/7, there is no law as long as the dog has food and shelter.
I don't think she is spayed but at her age I am not sure if it matters. Last edited by susieqt; July 26th, 2005 at 07:26 PM. Reason: name of town |

Yeah, it matters. She's a prime candidate for pyometra. Poor angel.
My husband is shaking his head over my shoulder as I type this.. What kind of shelter does she have? She's outside!

Dog tied outside
It is odd that someone takes the time to come to the house daily to feed and water the dog. You would think it would be easier for them to bring the dog to their home or bring it to a shelter. Curious also that they are still in possession of the home. Do you think that maybe the elderly man made it a prevision of his will and testament that the dog live out his life at this home.
It breaks my heart hearing about this poor guy. |

Of course, we could kidnap her but I think the people in charge of this poor little doggie might give her up if I asked. But the question is: what to do with her once she is removed from there? I am working on getting her a foster home, I will find out this weekend for sure, keeping my fingers crossed!
I do also worry, though, once a dog is removed from being tied up outside, people usually just replace them, then the cycle begins again for some other dog. Two times in the past I have "liberated" dogs from their chains and then a few days later, another dog was there. |

In response to Coppperbelle's post, you might be right. They may be keeping the dog out of sentimental reasons seeing that it was their Father's dog, sick as that may sound.

But in this case, no one even lives there, and whoever feeds her would probably be glad to have her gone. As you say, they may just be keeping her because they dont' want to kill their dad's dog. |

Now if you were to untie her and she follows you home , I would not consider that dog napping but a huge case of compassion for this poor fur baby.

Hi Susie,
I live in st mathias and could come by and take a photo of her to post up on the site. Has the family decided to give her up? Tell me where she is and I'll go and steal her and keep her at my place until we find a home for her. Laurie |

Yes , of course, I meant "SAVE", I would never steal, that is sooo wrong!
I'm only about 10 minutes away from that dog! I'm absolutely positive if the owner were still alive he'd be furious and deeply disapointed with his family, Laurie

Yay... liberating this doggie is the right thing to do, and I for one will help sponsor a vet checkup for her.

Suzie send me an email cablemobile@hotmail.com with the dogs location. How is she tied up , just a regular chain, would I be able to undo it easily? What is her temperment as far as you've been able to tell? I'll go tonight!

An up-date on this poor little doggie should be posted by Sunday night at the lastest; we are in "negociations" with the owners who we asked to surrender the dog to us.

May I make a suggestion, with nothing intended except to ensure the best outcome for this dog (ie to be in a loving home)? Conduct the negotiations with a light hand, as if you were just offering to help instead of (even indirectly) slagging them (although they might deserve it). People are sometimes a bit leery of 'rescue types' and I wouldn't want them to refuse you just for the sake of being contrary. I know you know...
I once posted in a pet store about a deaf white cat I had found and needed a home for (in fact, at the time I had no idea it was deaf. duh). Anyway, a three or four people called me, not because they were interested in adopting the cat but to tell me how it should all be handled, can't remember the details but they were pretty aggressive. Really pi**ed me off. BTW, if it was anyone reading this, you are, of course, forgiven, old story. Just a thought. Last edited by badger; July 21st, 2005 at 02:37 PM. |

That's exactly how we are proceeding, Badger. We are not putting them down at all so they don't get on the defensive; we're just saying my sister's older dog passed away, he looked just like this one and she's fallen in love with him, etc. We'll have to wait until Saturday to see....

HI, everyone! The dog has been surrended to us; the owner said we could keep it. She should be going to her new home this week after we get hold of her new mommy! Sometimes there is happy endings!
