Excessive Bowel Movements

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and I have a question. My dog poops several times a day, sometimes when we go for a walk he will poop up to 4 times. He doesn't eat a lot, I give him two cups of food per day ( 1 morning and 1 evening). The consistency is pretty normal and I don't give him people food ever. Anyone know what's going on with my dog? Thanks!

Hey welcome! I think most would agree here that the quality of the food really makes a difference! If you pup is pooping it all away he is not using anything in it nutrient wise! I changed my dog to a higher meat content food which is better quality.... and he is 100 lbs...he doesnt poop even 1/2 the amount he used to and that was on vet prescribed food! He eats between 3-4 cups. Also how much excercise does he get? that will make a difference...

WOuld love to see some pics when your able to post some!

Which food are you currently feeding? When my dog was on Nutro he pooped 5+ times a day...and logically wasn't gaining weight properly. I switched to Wellness, he eats half as much, poops 2 times a day, and has filled out properly I would say look into some different holistic brands and try switching food....it makes a huge difference!

I agree with everyone here..the quality of food will make a huge difference. Mine was a big pooper too. I used to tip my dog walker extra because I felt so bad that she was cleaning up so much!!

Higher quality food did help but I found that when i switched him to raw/homefeeding I saw the biggest difference. My kitten poops more than him now!

The bottom line is the smaller the poops, the more nutrients are being absorbed by the body...so the higher quality the food, the better. There are tons of human grade, holistic, high quality kibble and canned dog foods out there..you can even do a mix of some raw or frozen with kibble, or supplement kibble with some fresh meat or veggies. Each dog is different, so you'll have to play around a bit with the formula to find what works for you and your dog.

Probiotics can help too..they are enzymes that help in breaking down the food. Also, don't be scared of the cost of the better quality stuff..it may cost more, but your dog will eat less of it, and poop less...so it evens out vs. the cheaper kibble.

My first thought as well when reading your post was that you must be feeding a lower quality dog food. Don't feel bad though, most of us have done this and it is surprising how many people think that a grocery store product is adequate nutrition for a dog. It isn't just the quantity of the stool that you will notice when your dog is fed a quality holistic food...it is the quality. Yup, poops have quality believe it or not! Dogs fed a good quality diet have smaller and firmer, darker poops than dogs fed inferior foods. I really noticed this when I adopted a dog that was fed Iams () and saw his first bowel movement. I was so used to my dogs poops.....and his looked so weird and alien to me. It was huge and yellow....probably due to all the corn, fillers and God knows what going through him.
