Eben

A couple of years ago, I had a dog named Eben... Labrador X Bernese (getting very popular around here actually) Seriously I think he was the best dog I ever had, loyal, very loving and kind, protective of his family and somewhat of his home too.

When he was 17 months, I had to take the difficult choice of letting him live a caged life full of pain and suffering , or grant him the only mercy I could give him.... to this day, I still have to remind my self that I did what was best for him...

An incident occurred, my dog leg was injured badly, Torn ACL they say, unfortunately even with care arthritis started to gnaw his joint, and the second leg, since it always got the weight, was starting to weaken as well. I suspect my former roommate hit the dog once when I was gone, but I never had the proof of that. But he always had a weakness to his joints, unfortunately like a lot of his "breed"

After much visits to the vets and multiple opinions from veterinary friends and orthopedic expert, I took the choice to put him to sleep.

The other option was a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), which I was ready to pay, gladly, if it would have made him happy. But with the other leg being weaker, would have snapped it was just a matter of time.

There was also the idea of letting him rot in a cage, not being able to move much and dopped on heavy pain killer. But between you and me, a Labrador /bernese... ..a young dog even, caged for the rest of his life?

He lived a too short life, but was loved every moment of it.

I am so so sorry. I just went through something VERY similar with my foster Ava. We as well made the choice to set her free from her pain and it was so difficult.
