I'd like to help out but I can't reach anyone ! Any idea where else I can call ?

I tried calling the SPCA several times this morning and no answer. I did leave a message on the Foster voice mail but it only opens at 4pm...

If anyone has any other ideas, you can PM me - I'm off to bed as I work nights this week but I'll see it at 5pm.

This is taken from another thread where you were asking the same question."

"Julie - I was there yesterday for an unrelated reason - they are swamped with calls and cannot keep up. Please remember that there are other calls regarding animals in peril, distress etc that must be taken as a priority. From what I was told, all the phone numbers are being taken down and there are people there in charge of sourcing out foster homes that will call back when they can. You need to be patient - their hands are full.

Also, you must really research the breed that you will foster. You must also look at the dynamics within your own household. This is not an easy task as there are dogs and cats that are tramatized and it is not at all like taking in an animal that is up for adoption in a shelter or rescue group.

These animals require DEDICATED people that are not there for the limelight (not saying you are) but there to spend the better part of the day to work with them. This is NOT an easy assignment. These dogs and cats really need people that know what they are doing and whom will NOT give up under any circumstances.

Though I think people have good intentions, this task is huge and requires people that have experience with certain breeds. Also, I have seen time and again, people take a dog in need and give up after 2 weeks because they nip or are not house trained etc.

My comments are not geered to you specifically Julie - but to anyone that is considering this - I want them to really understand the COMMITMENT that must be made....and it is a big one!"

I second your post Benmax .... I've been there 3 times so far.

Also , this is long term fostering , it could take 1-2-3 years for a trial , until then , the dog stays a foster. It is not legally yours.

Thanks for the reply Ben !

I have been fostering for the Laval SPCA for 3 years until it closed last spring. Mostly cats/kittens but also the odd dog. I just recently brought back Louka to the MTL SPCA after fostering the little munch-mouth for 3 weeks. He had the beginnings of kennel cough but it never develloped. Man that boy liked to chew !

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/dis...petid=12028158

I figured the lines must be swamped and if it weren't for me working nights all week, I would have stopped in to see if they needed help.

I see your point about the education that is involved with a puppy mill rescue. I'm not too worried about house-breaking. Most of my fosters weren't (except Louka !) but I do worry about nipping as I have a 9 yo daughter. My plan is to take the whole family down and see what they need help with and if anyone "fits" with our family. (that's usually what we do anyways).

I've never fostered a rescue though... Do you suggest I hold off until we know what we're up against ?

Thanks
Julie

Julie , I think you should talk to the person in charge of the fostering program and see with her

Thank you for your reply. Personally (like Frenchy) I have taken in puppymill dogs in the past. Their requirements are very different than a dog that has already had human contact or living in a home environment. This situation is very unique and different. You really need to know a little about animal behaviour and the breed that you are considering as well. Most (if not all) have been through a horrific ordeal. All they understood was neglect and abuse but never human contact that was of tenderness. The rehabilation process is lengthy and a huge amount of time and commitment is required. It is almost like your pets and family come second....which is not healthy in itself. I am single and for this reason I am at liberty to consider - which by the way I am not. My reason for so is that I work 8 hours a day and I cannot provide these animals with what they need. For me to say this, truly says alot as I personally have always taken one in. This is really a HUGE undertaking. Think about it seriously first.

Thanks Frenchie and BenMax

I have been thinking about what you said all day. I'm still waiting for a call back and will speak to the foster organizer about her opinions on the subject.

I guess my point of view is this: Sure it would be great for 100+ people to step up and foster. Ideally, they would have no other pets or family and worked either very little or from home and could devote 100% of their time to the re-education of the poor animals. Sadly, they are not likely to find that. Most people work, have familes, obligation, pets, hobbies, etc... Isn't it better for the animals to be fostered by people who can give them at least most of what they need rather than continue to live in a cage at the SPCA ? (albeit a much larger one than they are used to...)

Once these animals are healthy and are released back "in the real world" and have been adopted by for-ever homes, it is also likely that these people will work and have other obligations. They would then have to re-learn to live alone for some hours a day while their family is at work and school rather than being with them all the time.

I agree with you 100% about the mountain for these animals to climb. Just learning the basics will be huge. But I'd hate to think that you have to be the "perfect family" to be able to make a difference in the lives of these poor souls. Anything is a step up from where they came from, no ?

(having said that, I only work 2 out of 5 weeks and then only on nights, there actually is someone at home 90% of the time)

IMO , yes , I was mostly thinking about you , will you have time for this ?

I should add also , again IMO , I got 2 goldens straight from a puppy mill , and one great dane (Nelly) but Nelly spent 2-3 weeks at the spca before getting here. And I found a big difference. They get "broken" at the spca , what I mean is , they get an overdose of handling by people. So they get used to it pretty quickly. When Nelly got to my place , she was ok with me. A bit scared , but not anxious. She even slept in my car on her way over.

As for the 2 goldens that went straight from the puppy mill to my home , OMG , that was hard

Hi Folks,
I am very swamped at the moment and have not been able to return foster or adoption offers.

I am the contact for these animals to be adopted or fostered. Please call 514-739-4444 and leave a message with details. I will start working on this on saturday.

What we need most at the moment are experienced dog people to come and help as of Friday with volunteering such as cleaning feeding medicating and limited socialisation. So if you can volunteer in the next few days starting Friday, please contact Anita at 514-739-4444.

Thank you so much for any assistance.
Jenn

I would love to help out, but my daughter would be overwhelmed. She has come with me to the SPCA before, and was very upset after, imagine this. I would be heart broken, imagine her.
If I can get a sitter, I will be there

Hey Brenda,
We can always use an extra pair of hands. Lots of tiny little dogs that need love and attention. RL, absolutely no kids allowed. No one under 18 is admitted for everyone's safety. Hope you understand and happy to see anyone who wished to help.

My hubby and I went to the spca last night to see if these dogs were available for adoption yet. We were told that the dogs are in such poor shape, that they cannot even eat yet. If they eat, they vomit. Also, the volunteers at the spca have to change their clothes every time they go in to see those dogs as they are full of fleas, mites, viruses, etc.............it's unbelievable. Makes you really want to scream..................

You know,it is just such a horrible on-going situation, one that seems to never end,I don't know what to say anymore
IMO,the only deterrent in these horrors, would be to put these morons in jail,so they are unable to just relocate,at least for a couple of years.
IMO it should be jail for life, but that's a bit unrealistic
Also,pet-shops should not be allowed to sell puppies/kittens,we all know where most of these pups are coming from.
It's not like people are not educated about this situation and where the cute pup in the store might be coming from,so I do not understand why people still buy puppy-mill puppies and thereby keeping these horrible people in business!

I know people are all waiting for the spca to get back to them. Please be patient , I think they are only 2 persons returning the calls and try to imagine just sorting all the messages they have on their answering machine .... and still have to help with the dogs in between.

Thanks everyone for helping. Just give them a few days (maybe more?) to get back to you.

Thanks to all of you who came to help today. The united animal nations are pulling out tomorrow and we'll need volunteers to fill the holes they leave. They are some of the best people we have ever met. If you have time to help during the week, please call Anita at 514-739-4444 and leave a message. There is something for everyone to do.
