The conundrum of the suet cage...
After the bear raid took out most of our feeders and left us with only a double shepherd's hook to hang feeders from, I had to come up with a new feeder arrangement. I took our platform feeder and looped the suet cage over the hanger to make a single unit. I hung that on one hook and another seed feeder on the other.
This made for a bit of a conundrum for the larger woodpeckers. They could no longer just fly to the suet--it was hanging surrounded by the chains supporting the platform feeder. This was going to require some problem-solving. ![]() Red-bellied woodpecker sizes up the problem carefully.
"I think I can hop up from below!" "Yes!!" "Whoopsie! But I have to be careful!" Problem solved!

Hairy woodpecker came up with a different solution:
"I can get there from above...with a little creative backward maneuvering!"

"Yes!!!" And after a bit of a rest comes the well-earned reward! Who says they're just bird brains? ![]()

![]() ![]() Great pics, Hazel. Yes, I agree, birds can become quite ingenious when it comes to getting at their food.

The woodpeckers really do put the suet to good use during nesting season.
