chihuahua puppy's Hocks click frequently

I have a 14 week old chihuahua puppy who is very active and playful. I think he's about 3 1/2 - 4lbs. about 3 weeks ago (at about 11 weeks of age) i noticed a clicking sound from his back leg, but could not pin point which joint it was coming from. (It sounds similar to when a persons ankle joint or knee may click when they get out of bed or walk down stairs)

The clicking sound is becoming more frequent, several times a minute when hes running and playing, and sounds like it may be coming from both back legs now, possibly the hock and ankle joints.

It does not seem to bother him much at all when running or jumping or spinning after his tail. I've had him since 8 weeks old and he hasn't taken any major falls but he has learned how to climb on my low sofa (about a foot high) and jumps off onto the carpet sometimes. we try to avoid this as much as possible however.

Im not sure what to do about this, we told the vet and she didnt seem concerned at all at 11 weeks and said his knees and hips seemed normal, and had no real comment on the issue. Is this common in chihuahuas or is it a problem I should watch closely?

Could I please get only replies from people who have had real experiences and/or factual knowledge of this situation/problem with chihuahuas /small dogs, as im worried about this problem and would like to know what's happening with his legs

I do not have a chihuahua or a small dog but I think they are prone to having a luxating patella. If your vet cannot confirm this then I would get a second opinion. Good luck and keep us posted.

If your vet does not have experience in orthopedic issues, you should find a ortho specialist to look at your dog. While I don't have small dogs, I do have experience with the 'clicking' noise. It happens when two bones are hitting/rubbing together, which means that either the natural padding (meniscus) in one of the joints is damaged (or the joint itself is damaged) or the tendons/ligaments holding the joint in the proper position are not doing their job. Whether it is displaysia, a cruciate ligament issue or luxating patella, only an ortho vet can tell you.
