The Hazel Run Feeders are hotbeds of activity!

So many visitors this year!

The juncos are flocking in...

...as are the white-throated sparrows.

If the snow holds off, we'll have juncos on and off most of winter,
but the sparrows are still on their way south and will be gone in another week or so.

The purple finches (Mr on the left, Mrs on the right) are showing up regularly for the sunflower.

Pesky Red Squirrel is also showing up regularly, but having more trouble getting seed since we wrapped the shepherd's hook with an ABS plastic sheath. She's looking a little peeved these days...

Even without Pesky Red Squirrel's help, the sunflower seed still needs replenishing every other day.

Mr and Mrs Downy Woodpecker (that's Ma on the left and Pa on the right) are making good use of the suet.

The white-breasted nuthatches are crazy about it, too.

The red-breasted nuthatches are guilty of a little suet consumption, too.

Suet doesn't last long here...we go through about 1.5 cakes a week right now.
That'll go up to 2 or more a week during the really cold spells.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my little goldfinch and chickadee buddies.
They come every day and scold me while I'm filling feeders.

But the bestest encounter so far this fall was a ruffed grouse in the front yard.

After playing peek-a-boo around the tree trunks...

...it made a run for the pines and then disappeared from view.

Great pics, Hazel .....you get such a variety of birds at your place.

Was the grouse teasing the pack?

Nope. It was a silly-headed grouse It evidently flew into the side yard, walked around a bit, then realized it was inside the fence. Instead of flying 6 feet up and over, it spent the afternoon before we got home and saw it, trying to find an opening in the fence. It was pretty tired, so I tossed it over the fence, then escorted it out to the pines.

The really good news was that after a little rest, it was later seen flying around in there.

We don't know if the Pack even saw it!

Man! That new camera you got yur self sure does take some dandy pictures. Such a variety of beautiful birds.

Pictures such as yours really help non-bird watchers (such as myself) understand their habitates and behaviour.

Thanks for the awesome snaps Hazel.

This camera is just awesome! Most of those pics are very tight crops of much larger images. The coolest thing is that they also look good printed, even though the file size is sometimes under 400KB! I continues to amaze madame hazel.

Oh my hubby has a beautiful old fashion SLR Pentax that takes great pictures. He's the only one that knows how to use this old piece and use to take beautiful pictures. Then he needed needed bifocals!

I've got a Minolta manual SLR--they're really fun to use, but the cost of film and processing is horrible...plus it limits me to only taking as many pics as are available on the roll of film. So I'm loving the digital SLR...only problem is that now I need an intervention because I'm taking too many pics !

Thanks, gals!

We see a fair number of Pileated WP's, Chris, but they're pretty shy. Getting a pic is going to be 10% sneakiness and 90% luck, I think We have a couple of pairs that nest along the power line right-of-way to our north.

Let me know when you want to come watch the Purple Finches, kr, and I'll make sure the goggies are in a different yard so your furkids aren't harrassed.

I haven't seen/heard many this year, either, Chris Not sure if they had a bad year or if they just move around. They hung around for a while when the elderberries and dogwood berries were ripe, but I haven't seen them since.
