A New Flower Bed!
My parents came up for a visit over the long weekend and brought with them a truckload of perennials from the local greenhouse, as well as from their gardens. Talk about a GREAT housewarming present!
We got to work the next morning in creating the new front flower bed. 1. My dad starting the digging 2. The new bed- all dug up, filled in with 10 bags of top soil and new plants placed approximately where they will be planted 3. The finished product!

Now for some close-ups.
1. My absolute FAVOURITE (so far!) - Foxglove. The bumblebees love it, and I hear it attracts Hummingbirds too too bad its a biennial... 2. Salvia and Veronica 3. the tall plant on the right, does anyone know what that is? My dad dug it out of his garden but my mom thinks its a weed!!!

Beautiful garden, mollywog! What a wonderful house-warming gift!
The tall flower you were wondering about--is it getting tiny clustered gold flowers on it? It looks something like some of the goldenrods we have--they're really brightening up our front lawn this summer! The Foxglove is gorgeous! Just make sure that you keep Molly away from it--it's poisonous if eaten. I think it's the plant they make the heart-drug, Digitalis, from.

Wow! You've got quite the gardens happening there.
The one "I forget the name but its cute" looks like a white astilbe flower. I have astilbe but it's pink. Great job Mom & Dad! Gotta love the parents eh?

Your new garden is beautiful!!
I was thinking the tall plant could be Phlox. It could be golden rod too. If that's the case your mom is right. It's a weed. Although there is a garden variety of golden rod now sold in garden centres. |

yup, you really gotta love the parents. My parents have green thumbs so I am hoping some of that rubs off on me! My Dad is already planning the next projects around here for their next visit- rip out the old vegetable garden (its literally FULL of weeds) and fill it in with topsoil then plant grass seeds.
Yes, I have heard that Foxglove is used for heart medication. Kinda neat! and here's to hoping that it re-seeds and blooms every year somewhere in that bed! And don't worry Hazel, Molly is nowhere near that front bed, so she can't get into it. I did however find her eating pansies in the backyard one day!!! (they grow randomly in our yard)

There actually is a Phlox sold in garden centres here too. I have one in my front bed that should be opening soon. But if your mom hasn't seen it before then I would think it is a wild variety. They are pretty too. You could let it start to flower so you can see for sure what it is.

Either goldenrod or phlox are pretty! I'd keep it in either case (And, in fact, I have both in my gardens )

Golden rod is pretty but I have 4 out of 5 kids that are allergic to it. I try to get rid of as much of it as possible.

When DH found out that it was Goldenrod he said I have to get rid of it... he's really allergic to it too!

Goldenrod is not a hightly allergenic plant. It's the ragweed that is blooming at the same time that is the usual culprit. Most showy plants don't aggravate allergies because their pollen is too heavy--they rely on other organisms (bees, flies, bats, birds) to spread it to other plants. Non-showy plants, like ragweed, have light pollen that is dispersed on the wind and is breathed in by humans, where it aggravates the allergies.
Honest! Goldenrod is getting a really bad rap!

sorry to hijack the thread, but is goldenrod ok for dogs? I've got a big wild patch in the back yard and Molly helped herself to a load of it this evening. I'm fairly certain she's part goat
on topic, I actually really like a lot of things that are classified "weeds" including dandelions. Everyone else seems to mow them down the second they appear, but to me their little sunny yellow heads signal summer, and I can remember picking bunches for my Mom when I was little, so they often turn to puffballs before I mow the lawn.

How much did she eat, im_nomad? Our dogs will nibble on it on occasion, but none of them have chowed down on it... Not sure if it's problematic or not. Sorry! Maybe give the vet a call tomorrow and see if there's anything to watch for?
ETA: my search finally loaded and the only thing I can find about toxicity and goldenrod is that the Rayless Goldenrod can be toxic to dogs. Any idea what kind of goldenrod Molly ate?
