She thinks it's up above a ceiling, Melinda--if it's too dark and the bird is too far back, it won't be able to see the light from the door. Got any ideas about how to get it out from above the ceiling?

is there anyway she can shine a small flashlight into the ceiling? the bird will go to it.......like if there is an opening in the ceiling that is....what would help is other bird noises....we once borrowed my dads canary to lure a bird from a chimney flute

Melinda, since lp has gone to work and i can probably explain it better, here goes. LP's basement ceilings are unfinished all but the sons bedroom which i just put in. I'm not sure how she would hear the bird in there as i used soundproof insulation to do the ceiling, and at the edge of the wall i stood peices up on end to block noise coming over the wall. It could be above the sons closet as i didn't put the ceiling in there so no insulation. lol knowing LP the bird probably left hours ago. If the bird is still there, now no one is home it will probably come out on its own.

Dh thoroughly checked the ceiling throughout the entire basement when he got home form work. No sign of her anywhere so she must have flown out the open door
Now I just have to figure how she got in so this doesn't happen again .

Maybe she had a key from the old owners.

Oy! I do hope not--birds of a feather flock together, y'know...and blackbirds have lots of friends!
Was there a window or a door left open? Do you have chimneys?

Hmmmm...that's a tough one! Any open vents in the roof? Any openings in sofit and fascia?

Honestly, I have no idea. THere are several vents on the roof but the openings look awfully small for a large bird to get through. I took a walk around the house to inspect sofits and fascia looked good to me, no spaces or holes
. I guess next step would be to get on the roof and inspect it properly...I mean dh's next step .

I do hope it got out safely, thanks for explaining it to me Aslan, LP do you have a chimney that leads to the basement? if so there should be a "plated" opening, you use it to clean out the chimney. a lot of times the plate is missing off of it and a bird will fall into the chimney and into the basement, we removed our chimney and unfortunately the original owners never capped (screened) the chimney and a few birds lost their lives falling into it.

LP when I moved into this house I woke up one morning to a chorus of birds! It scared me to death becuae they sounded like they were in the room!
Anyway it turns out they had gotten in through the fan on the roof and were preparing a HUGE nest! I never dreamed a bird or birds rather could carry so much stuff inside! I wish I had taken pictures of it! needless to say a friend removed the nest and placed some addition wiring across so they couldnt get back in! on a positive note there were no eggs yet but it was huge! Hope birdie made it out okay!
