Another option down the line might be small claims court, Adriann. Not sure what the laws are in SC but you might be able to recover some money under a puppy lemon law, too, if you have such a law...worth looking into at least to help pay for his medical care.
I'm so sorry you're going through this with Horton. He's very lucky to have come to you. If you have a hot-water bottle, fill it with warm water, cover it with a terry-cloth towel and let him snuggle with that after a seizure...maybe the old trick of a ticking clock will soothe him, too... Does touching him while he's crying afterward seem to soothe him or aggravate the crying? Probably it's going to be a trial and error sort of thing--if something helps, great; if it doesn't work, try something different. I'm wondering if the crying is a reaction to the seizing or just normal for such a young pup missing his mom and sibs? that he's diagnosed and can be treated soon!

You Guys Are Great!
I do have some wonderfully cute pics of him, I will post them later this afternoon once I'm home.
I will check out the on SC laws, I'm pretty sure my partner has done that already. He and I have been communicating all day and he is going to make sure Horton has the things he needs. Right now we just want to be able to afford all the special care Horton needs. I will try the hot water bottle! I don't have one right now and Horton isn't a whiner...the only time he whines (and howls like the little mini hound dog he is) is after an episode. He paces for about 10 minutes like he doesn't know where he is and his heart rate is extremely excellerated. I read that holding them in a towel and speaking calmly and loving to them during the episode will lesson the duration and severity. So, Horton has been sleeping on my chest and last night when it started, I wrapped him up and the soothing really helped with the seizure. He did still convulse for about 3 minutes and loose control of all the bowels and foam at the mouth (it's horrible). But, he stays so worked up after the episode, I'm afraid he'll excit himself into another seizure. |

Update on Horton
Well, we really have nothing new. However, Horton has had a seizure today at the vets office. How much it breaks my heart I wasn't there for him when it happened, it is good the vet was able to witness it. We are awaiting two different set of blood work, one we will have back this afternoon, and one in the morning. So far, all other tests point to a perfectly healthy puppy.

Unfortunately the best treatment for a pet actively seizuring is intravenous medications such as valium (diazepam). Oral forms of antiseizure medication do not help an actively seizuring medication. I would recommend that you start a log (if you have not already) that indicated the following: date and time of seizure, how long the seizure lasted, how long the post ictal (after effects) lasted, and any other unusual behavior. This can help provide information to your veterinarian. After the seizure, they are typically very disoriented. Making sure they cannot hurt themselves (i.e. fall into a pool, down steps, etc...) is important. Avoiding bright light, loud sounds and any form of stress is also helpful. I wish I could be of more help. Best of luck.

Dr. Lee
Thank you for the information. I am keeping a log now. What should I be prepared for? I guess what I am asking, is the outlook grim or promising? Should I allow the vet to keep him over night? I have not because there isn't anyone there at night to comfort him when he seizes which usually begins when he is sleeping. (during the day or night)

I am not sure how AKC works but I bought my boys with Campaion CKC papers. Means I can't show them unless I have written permission from the breeder same with breeding. Not that I want too. But it came with the breeder's registration number with the CKC and the litter number. Did you get any of that??? I would still contact the AKC because the a#$^&*% That sold you this poor boy needs to be held accountable. Good luck with your boy and you are in our prayers

Kind of. You have to be careful in the States. The chances of finding a Canadian Kennel Club registered dog in S. Carolina is pretty slim but you have a great chance of finding a Continental Kennel Club registered dog. I can assure you that the Con. KC is often confused with the Can. KC (and they bank on that fact) since many, many puppymills use them to register dogs that are not registerable with AKC.

As far as leaving him there, if there is no one there overnight, the only benefit is that they will be there in the morning and able to monitor him the next day. Is it possible to bring him home (catheter in) and just bring him back first thing in the morning? The other option is a 24 hour emergency hospital for observation which would be ideal. This choice must be made on the availability and financial issues. I hope that helps. It is so difficult with seizure cases. It is scary and it is can be frustrating and definitely expensive at times. Best of luck.

Hortons Update
It doesnt look good. Horton had another seizure while we were there and his chances of a normal life....well are slim to none. We are heartbroken, the best that we can hope for is a liver disease. We are going to be refered to a specialist tomorrow.

Adriann, just looking at his sweet face brings tears to my eyes, poor little puppypoor you
You know we are all for little Horton, that he survives and can live a wonderful long life with you. A little off topic, but one of my sons is Epileptic, after any seizure,he gets totally frantic, does not know what he is doing or where he's going, very much like little Horton. But I am hoping Horton is not epileptic, hoping he has something that can be cured.

Im so sorry your son suffers from Epilepsy! Unfortunately for Horton this would be a best case scenario and they have ruled it out because he is too young to have it. We can't even begin to give him medicine for the seizures because of his poor liver functions. Thank you for your words of encoragement....at this point we need a miracle.
