Urinating Kitten
Hello,
I have 2 male cats, one is just over a year old and the other is a kitten of around 6 mos. The kitten has had issues with peeing around the house for the last couple of months. We thought the issue might be due to him not being neutered yet. He has been neutered about 3 weeks ago now and is still peeing around the house. It stopped for about a week and then just in the past few days he's done it at least once a day. We took him to the vet and the cleared him for UTI so its not that. They think its probably behavioural and the he has anxiety from being around the other cat. I can't see how that could be, he's way crazier than our older cat and will chase the older cat around the house. Plus they seem to get along and not fight too much, and will frequently sleep together. I'm just not sure what to do and really don't want to be putting him on any kind of meds like Prozac. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

How many litter boxes do you have? A good rule to follow is a box per cat plus one extra, preferably located in different areas. Also making sure they're scrupulously clean helps (scooped at least once a day, if not more).
It may also be that your little guy isn't so fond of the litter you're using. What kind is it, and have you tried any others? Maybe you'll have better luck with Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter or litter additive. Another product that is often recommended in cases of both territorial marking and stress is Feliway. You can read lots more info this topic at these links: http://www.catinfo.org/litterbox.htm http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/inappro-elim.html http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/inappro-elim2.html http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm

We have 2 litter boxes and they are both cleaned every day.
We use an corn based unscented litter. We have to use something like this as our other cat has mild asthma. Also, they frequently will use each others litter boxes, so I'm not sure using a different type of litter will help. He does use his litter box to poo and has never had an issue with that before. Also, I thought FeliWay was more more spraying rather than inappropriate urination? |

It can take up to 3 months after neutering for the testosterone to be gone from his system. Although it seemed to take my male 5 months before his behavior really started to change. If your lucky you just have to give it more time.

Still wouldn't hurt to add a third one, in a different part of the house. My cat has 3 boxes and uses all 3, even with me cleaning them twice a day. I think he just likes having a few options.

If the inappropriate elimination is due to stress, like your vet was thinking, then it does help with that as well. I'd certainly give it a try before going the Prozac route.

My kittens peed here and there too until...
Hi, I was just reading your post... i have 2 kittens, and they seemed to always pee at the same places; along a wall, by the door, behind a door... i was told that they would pee over and over at the same place because it 'smelled' of pee there... I was also told that to wash the places where they pee with Sunlight dish soap, and then rinsing it would do the trick... it did for Tonali and Elphin. Good luck with yours!
Sandy
