My 18 year old cat has problems walking

My little guy is pretty well near the end, but I'm trying to make him as comfortable as possible for his last days. He has a number of medical problems, the most serious of which is Chronic Renal Failure. But we're dealing with his issues as well as we can.

The reason for my post is that just this morning I noticed that he is having problems walking now. In particular, the lower portion of his right front leg (okay, his foot) appears to be completely useless. He can move the rest of the leg but when he tries to walk his foot just folds under his leg and he can't put any pressure on it, so he just stops and sits there.

I've done a general Internet search but can find no mention of this type of issue. Most issues seem to involve arthritis (but his symptoms to not appear to be arthritic).

Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong?
