Shadow is in the hospital!

Yesterday afternoon he was limping but he jumped up on the windowsill and seemed ok after that - he slept on my bed, got up and walked around and limped a bit but he ate and drank and seemed ok.

During the night he got off the bed to go out and eat and I could hear him crying so I flew out to see what was wrong. He had jumped up on his feeding table and was eating but was making the strangest noises - almost like a growl. I looked at his paw and nearly fainted - the pad has been totally torn!

The vet opened at 8:30 - they are in the next town south of us - so I was there at 8 and, bless them, they let me in early and said he would probably need surgery. He's there now and I'm waiting to hear from them.

I absolutely know he will be ok but my emotions right now are off the scale!

When I hear from the vet, I'll post a follow-up.

OMG....poor Shadow. I was also going to ask if you have any idea how it could have happened? And, what can the vet do? I hope everything goes well.

Update...

The vet, bless his heart, called me and said he would not stitch his pad - they have found that stitches in cat's paw pads just don't stay there. He said it would require that Shadow be anesthetized and it would be expensive. He suggested I use wood pellets for litter because that doesn't get caught up in the wound. He gave Shadow an aspirin-like painkiller and he gave me some antibiotics and an antiseptic cleansing solution to wash the pad twice a day. If anything changes, I'm to call and get him back in. This vet is awesome - its the animal before the money!

I have no idea how this happened - Shadow was under the deck - one of his favourite outdoor spots so maybe he tore the pad on something under there???? I may never know but he is walking on it now and has started purring again. Whew...

Thanks, everyone for your good wishes I'm calmer now and Shadow is a happier kitty...

Shadow is definitely doing better but I'm now on his "don't come near me with that thing in your hand" list. I've given him two shots of the antibiotic - by syringe and he DOES NOT LIKE IT...

Bless his little heart though - no more crying when he walks... broke my heart to hear him...

The antibiotics are injectibles?!

I hate giving shots. How many will Shadow need?

Glad Shadow is okay and good luck with the injections.

Is it possible for you to get under there to look? We have a wood patio and there are always nails that "lift up" that we have to hammer back down so paws don't get caught on them. Maybe there's nails sticking out underneath that need to be "flattened out".

I wonder if the vets have looked into the glue-stitches they use in human ERs now

I use the Feline Fresh pine pellets works great & had no problem converting my formerly clumping-clay-only senior kitty to using it. And no silica dust & has a nice mild pine scent - stuff works great

Speedy recovery Shadow

New update..

Today Shadow has started running again! Yahoooooo... his paw is still sore 'cause when he's on the hard floor he limps but on the dog's blanket and on the furniture, he runs...

What a relief!

... and he does, too. It's so funny to see him sleeping in one of the dog beds and the dogs want to go to bed - but they won't disturb him... cute to watch...
