Dachshund with irritated ears

We just adopted a 4 year old dachshund last week. His ears are very sensitive. It's the bottom of his ears, the edge. The are scaley and crusted with blood. They hurt him to touch them and he often wants to shake his head. The inside of ears are not dirty or red. I don't think it's earmites. I'm not sure what would be causing the irritation on the edges of his ears. It's on both ears too. Thanks for your help!

First question that pops into my head is "what has the vet said about it?"
If there hasnt been a vet visit yet, its a good idea to have one done. Sounds painful, and could be a number of things. Most likely going to need some medication to help it out.

Please take your pup to the vet as soon as possible. They might well need to do an analysis of the blood and skin. I have seen this before - on a mini Dachshund. It might well clear and stay dormant and then resurface - and also might well get far worse. In the case I know about, it was contagious to other animals, but it was really bad.
