Puppy - not sleeping through the night
Hi I am new on this forum and I have a question about my 9 month old yorkie/maltese cross. When I first got him he was kennel trained and he would stay in his kennel at night with no problems. Now the last 2 weeks or so he starts whinning about 3-4 o'clock in the morning needing out. I have let him out some of these times and when I do he always has to pee or poop. Like I said he just started doing this recently. He used to sleep through the night and I would let him out in the morning when I got up around 7 or so and he would be fine. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep him sleeping through the night without having to get up. We are expecting a baby soon and I don't want to have to get up with the baby and the dog every couple hours nor do I want the dog to wake up the baby with his whinning. Any suggestions would be greatful!! Thanks

Welcome to the board, your pup is still young, and it's also small, small dogs have small bladders. I take my dog out pretty late, she used to wake up around five and do the same thing, so I slowly changed her schedule. What time do you take her out at night? You might have to start pushing the time for your last walk of the night later.
Here's a link about introducing a new baby to your pets, it did say to try to get your pet used to the new schedule. Don't worry, a lot of babies can sleep through anything, mine could even sleep through my hubby's snoring. You said "We are expecting..." so I'm thinking you have someone to help, what I did was get my hubby to take the dog for the early morning walk. http://www.animalhealthchannel.com/newbaby/index.shtml Good luck, we would love to see pics of your pup. |

Also be sure to check that there is no medical issue such as a bladder infection that might be causing this change in behavior.

I agree. As he was sleeping through the night, and this has just started, a bladder or urinary tract infection is a definite possibility.

Congratulations on the impending arrival!
Check all the things previously mentioned. . . When do you feed your dog? I'd pick up the food a little after 4 in the afternoon if you can, and give him a little time to get a drink and pick that up around 4:30. He won't die of thirst of hunger between late afternoon and early morning. Then give him a chance to do his doo last thing before going to bed. THe good thing is that he's waking you to let him out--he could be just making a mess in his box. |
