Good article. I'm one of the people who'll have to get over the 'yuckiness' of handling raw meat!! I've tried raw 3 times, all of them disasters. But I've read ALOT, and am starting to consider trying it again....maybe in a few weeks....or a few months....or a year or two.....

For raw feeding where do you get the meat?? ( prolly a really dumb question) I was wondering because Idealy I would like to feed raw, but just partially.
I get alot of my own personal meat ( beef, pork, chicken ect ) from the Menonites down the road. Is that meat alright to feed them?

just a side note --- Eryka, if you feed both raw and kibble, make sure not to feed at the same time (or near the same time) because raw is digested faaster than kibble, and feeding both at the same time, will result in trapping the raw meat in the intestines for too long, and can cause salmonella poisoning.

i buy the dog's meat from the butcher's or the supermarket, wherever there is a sale! ground raw green tripe from the holistic petstore. oh and my dogs often eat both kibble and raw meat at the same mealtime (they steal from each other,s foodbowls, grumble grumble) and i find that there is only a problem (read: really stinky gas) if there is raw bone involved
raw feeding is pretty cool, i love it, the dogs love it... let me know if you have any questions!

i don't feed them veggies... nor fruit... they won't eat them no matter what and they do fiiiiine. really fine! I've had bloodwork done on both of them recently and they're in perfect health. but if they liked veggies & fruit, i'd give them some as snacks, not as part of their diet. raw meat: 60% raw meaty bones: 20% offal: 10% all kinds of other stuff: 10% it's so flexible though... up to you to tailor their diet to your budget, availability of products, your time, preferences, etc.

alot of websites recomend freezing all meat before feeding it....you'll prevent any kind of worms that way.

If I put Winnie on a raw food diet, how much of this do I give her. Do I give her a chicken carcass a day. Alot of wild dogs do die of starvation if they don't get enough of the Kill. Granted, Winnie will probably do very well on her own fat storage Is there a body weight ratio that is out there for raw diets?

a dog will eat anywhere between 1.5 and 3% of its body weight in raw food per day, on average. and never feed a chicken carcass, there is not enough meat on there... better to cut up a whole chicken in 4 or 6 pieces (depending on the size of the dog) and feed that.
