Trimming hair around rumpus

Weird question.

I have a 3 month old Papillon. She lets me brush her really nicely.

BUT I am having trouble around her rump.

My mom has mentioned that my Aunt (different breed of dog) trims around her dogs rump, to avoid cling ons and matting.

I sure hate to take Abby to a groomer to only have her rump hair trimmed.
I would like to be able to do this myself... without her looking like she has a baboons butt
Does anyone have any technic advise for this????

I have to trim Den-Den and Corky's tails to prevent the cling-ons and to maintain a nice pom-pom. Never use a blade that shaves closer than a #10. On the top of the tail, you can trim against the direction of growth without a problem, but on the tender underside, only go in the same direction as the hair grows. Better to trim more often than to shave too close. It's an area that's really easy to "burn", not meaning hot clippers, but shaving too closely. If you do accidentally get too close, sooth with aloe vera gel. The dialog as I'm trimming goes like this, "Hold still, Den-Den. That's a good boy! Mama's not molesting you! Mama's making your tail-tail so pretty! Good boy! Hold still, Den-Den! Don't you want a pretty tail-tail? Oh! Den'Den's tail-tail is soooo boootiful! Look at Den-Den's tail-tail, Papa! Does Corky want a pretty tail-tail, like Den-Den's pretty tail-tail? Where's Corky?"

Tucker has long butt and tail hair, but I would never dream of trimming it. I just keep it brushed and if I find he has a cling on I just get papertowel and pull it off. I think he would look funny with his beautiful fur trimmed. You can kind of see how long his fur is here.

I use a 1/8" comb and a 10 blade on Ciders chest, belly and bum in summer. been hit and miss at getting her bum perfect, everythingelse was easier to get looking okay.

Remember it's fur, and it grows back if you make a less than pretty cut.

Well...

The good news is that on Friday I went to Petsmart for a portable water bowl, and found a really cool travel bowl... it's have bowl attached to a water bottle...
BUT getting back to the point...

Their groomer was there and had nothing going. I stopped in to inquire and actually got Abby's butt and paw pads trimmed up for $5.00.

I really was pleased, I felt as though I found a great deal. I mean to do it myself would have been free, but $5.00... I spend $5.00 on things I don't even realizw I am spending it on.

So we are cling on free... Though Abby was probably wondering why the strange lady was shaving her butt, LOL

Good deal on the trim. I give the gang a trim around the butt every once and a while, between profesional visits. As was said, don't be afraid, it's fur and will grow back.
