(I changed the thread title for you )

Seems everything white (pasta, rice, sugar) is bad these days...bad for us and bad for our pets. The more processed it is (by greedy humans who do not care about your health) the badder it is.

I too, am actively avoiding useless carbs these days. I started on January 1 and I've lost a good 7 pounds (I was about 10 lbs overweight) on dietary change alone.

And just yesterday I was reading an article of a kitten who almost died because his owners had him on a Vegan diet, which consisted of potatoes, rice milk and pasta!

I have slowly been changing my diet too, I have to say my dogs have a much better diet than I do But you know, I also think its not the actual foods, but everything we have done to it (pesticides, gmo's whatever else) I mean, for example back in the day people ate a lot of potatoes or rice because it was cheap and they didn't have all the problems we have now.

A few years ago I lived in a small town in Costa Rica while doing volunteer work, and one of the main meals was Gallo Pinto, which is a mix of rice and beans, almost everyday I had that once or even twice a day, plus lots of fresh fruits, by the time I came back to Canada I had lost weight and was feeling pretty good... and then there was poutine

Totally hear ya. As a vegetarian that Costa Rican diet doesn't scare me at all - but i know it would freak most people out lol. That said, I'm a pretty big slave to Tofurky products I need my mock meats.

Back to the cats/kittens though...some people can really be stupid.
Horses eat hay, cows graze on grass and kittens feast on mice or fish...or some type of meat. They can't survive on soybeans, pasta, and rice even when it's served with a big fat bowl of Kumbaya.

I never did met a kitten that knew how to cook soybeans, pasta, and rice for a meal . That poor kitty to have such a stupid owner and I hope the person had no kids .

I've always fed the dogs meat and veggies, though some carbs help them with a bit of energy. Mine have never tolerated carbs well at all.

The issue of potatoes in particular is pretty interesting - wouldn't take much for them to put pounds on my dogs when I tried them.

I think a lot boils down to knowing your dog food manufacturer (as best as possible), since quality ingredients are at least as important as what the ingredients are.

+1
That would be the ideal.

If you remove the word 'dog' from your quote I think you could use the identical phrase to describe this ideal in the human diet as well. Mr.Christie and the Clown don't care too much about us - organic farmers do.

Interesting but I have fed Mattie white potatoes for many years and he's just fine. He's an itchy sheltie and can't take rice.

Part of the problem with pet food today is some the ingredients is coming from China and I am not sure if the companies print that on the list of
ingredients.

And that's partly why I grit my teeth whenever I see somebody present grain free dog food as if it's a panacea for all doggy ills. A lot of grain free uses potatoes.

Some dogs do just fine on potatoes, mine does. On corn and oats too when we hit those rotations.

I found that this web site after I been feeding Marty a grain free wet dog food and it has white potatoes . It's very confusing to know what to feed your pet. Here I am thinking I am doing a good thing not feeding my dog grains or dried dog food and I find that web site on line. I also was told garlic
and onions are bad for dogs and the Co op I buy my dog food sell treats for dogs that has garlic and onion in it. I wish the animals experts and vets would get together and agree what is OK to feed our pets. I feeling I am hitting my head against a

Yes, and not just ingredients from China. Our pet food serves as an outlet for food waste products from human manufacturing, probably moreso from the companies that produce human grade food.

It is confusing!!

I don't feed onions, as it doesn't take much in some dogs to damage the red blood cells. There apparently is a much larger safety margin for garlic, and probably isn't a concern in most dogs, though this is a good reason for annual bloodwork.
