Anyone know about cat breed genetics?
Hi all,
Hope I'm posting in the correct section. I've just joined and thought I'd try my luck finding some answers to a question or two - I'm studying cat ancestry. I'm trying to find out if it's possible if Siamese and Birmans had common ancestors, on the basis that they share the same gene mutation which causes the pointing of their coats. I've searched the net extensively but can't find any definitive answer. If anyone has any ideas where I could find out more, I'd be grateful. |

You've probably already seen this site, but just in case: http://www.messybeast.com/catarchive.htm#genetics

Yes, thanks; I know of this site; it's brilliant.
I was hoping for something that could state categorically that either the mutation arose in one area and spread by interbreeding and natural selection to others, or, that somehow the mutation spontaneously occured in different regions. Maybe the scientists don't know? |
