We have shared our lives with a number of dogs now, and about eighty percent of them enjoyed trips to the vet. But the twenty percent who did not enjoy it had very strong opinions on the matter, to the extent that we dreaded routine visits.
Sola does not mind visiting the vet, but she still manages to get us in to serious trouble every time we go. How are your dogs at the vet?

I don't have dogs, I have cats.
Of the 5, two (Maks & Kiska) are pretty cooperative. They protest, but only by meowing and trying to get into their carrier, however the vet has no trouble examining them. Czarina is usually too scared to protest so she is actually THE most cooperative, and doesn't let out a peep during her examination. Oksana, complains the entire time through the examination. Meorwling and moving. Vlad is a whole different case. I have to give him half a Xanax before taking him in because he gets downright scary. He is so terrified, he will move to the back of the carrier, hiss, growl, and scream bloody murder. It was during one of those fits, where they had to use "the gloves" to handle him, that the vet told me we needed to give him something before the exams, because she could not so much as even touch him. It's so bad, when I arrive with him and the vet techs see it's him, I can hear them in the back "Hey guys, heads up, Vlad's here." It's odd though because he's the only one of my gang who when he sees the carrier he happily walks in because he knows we are going somewhere.

I think for mine, it is something between love and hate, perhaps I should say they "tolerate" going. Mac never had issues until the day he needed blood drawn from a vein in his neck. Since then, he will cry/whine a bit, but there are so many good smells that he settles quickly. Cassidy does well. She trembles a bit when we get to the office, but she is very social. Now my sweet little Tipper was my trooper. She would cower and shake at the vets, but when she got so sick, vets became her lifeline. She would sit very dignified on my lap showing her Scottie spirit and reserve. She saw so many specialists during her final months and would trot back for her procedures with her little tail high and her head raised. This little sick girl truly showed what the "Diehard" nickname meant.

Julia hates the trip but at 5 lbs - she really has not much choice
. My rott Ben was very tolerant even though it was always for cancer treatments and operations - which was not pleasent for him. He always greeted them well and never made of fuss - bless his big beautiful heart. Luv ya Ben.

We have a great vet who is always really excited and happy when he see's Bailey, which makes her excited and happy. She has been to the vet for a pretty serious condition, had x-rays done, etc - but it didn't seem to deter her from liking the clinic.
I also take her there to pick up her food though, so she often goes in and out for quick trips every few weeks. That probably has helped.

She has no choice as she is a pocket pooch. She can kick a scream all she wants but lucky for me ...I win!
![]() Then I ask myself...if this was a big dog would I still tolerate this bad behaviour...answer is No. Amazing that I have fallen into the category of small dog denial of structure..My Bad!

Brina pulls me into the vet office, rushes up to the counter and surfs it looking for the girls behind it, if they aren't there she barks till they appear, then she proceeds to prance around the room meeting and greeting all the owners and pets and on her way will hop up onto the scales and sit, whether they are ready for her weight or not *L* once we go into the little examination room she's nervous till the vet comes in, then she bowls him over and cleans his ears.

My 10 month old Yorkie, Oscar, hates the vet. He clings to me and climbs on my shoulder once we enter the examination room...but this could just be because he is still young and has to get use to it!

Cats here too
![]() My Jaeger and Mooki were great at the vet ![]() Messina is an attention whore when she goes...only prob is when there is another kitty there not having much fun, she wants to be near them and she will start fussing until she sees the other kitty...I have been known to put her cage down in front of the kitty and soon the kitty shuts up and relaxes...Messina is such a good little momma. ![]() Seth...hmmm...my boy Seth. It's not so much the vet he doesn't like, it's being put into the carrier and being touched by me and the vet. He is another one who is scared to the point of just sitting there not moving, which is great to get all the things done that need to be done, but I feel for him  All are quiet in the truck...Jaeger used to sit on my shoulders while I was driving...seems like forever ago now.

I voted hate but I think that is to strong for my guys.
They like the people but are strongly suspicious of them as well. My vet is actually one of my clients and when she was younger Lucy used to go there all the time but she always crawled under the desk to be right next to me just in case some evil person wanted to clean her ears or cut her claws .Riley is okay but the chaos of the vet hospital stresses him out. He gets some "personal space" indoors issues and can be defensive with other loose dogs in the clinic although he rarely has any issues outdoors. The are actually very tolerant though and will basically let the vet or staff do anything to them.I give Lucy cartrophen shots at home and I don't even need anyone to hold her. She just sits and wags her tail and waits for the cookie .The cats hate the vet. Desi is always terrified and basically just freezes so they can do anything to her. Fred actually was a kitten adopted from the clinic but he also hates it there and the few times he has stayed there for some tests he will cower in his litter box . That also means he usually stinks of urine when he comes home and needs a bath.

Muggs absolutely loves the vets. The only problem is his aggression, we have to check that no dogs are in the lobby, then rush him to an exam room, same on the way out. One time we had stopped in to get something at our old vets, hubby ran in and I stayed in the car with Muggs. He carried on so much that I had to take him in to say HI, then he was fine. It always amazes me, considering a lot of his visits haven't been pleasant....porcupine quills, eye surgery etc.

Scruffy loves everyone and everything, including the vet, the ladies at the front, the other clients, their pets, the floor, the chairs, the magazines, everything as long as no one tries to look down his ears for any reason!

Well, now that I finally have a dog, I can say that the two times she has been since I got her she has thoroughly enjoyed it, and adores our vet. (Maybe that is because he gives her treats!)
Personally, I think if you keep down on the bad experiences, dog probably wont develop a hate for it. Just give them lots of treats and let everybody pet them (that is what I read to do anyway)

Current pup loves going anywhere in the car and anywhere there are people. Last girl, though, dreaded the Vets. No wonder, after being in for three days on IV to fight parvo at 6 months old. She did handle better with the female Vets and Vet Techs so I always specified, not HIM. Nicely of course and they understood, though most clients apparently asked FOR the male Vet.
Two of the cats are fine but our former feral is terrified to the point of immobility, meaning she can at least be handled. |

My yogi is fine on the way there and in the waiting room, but when its our turn he digs his heels in and sits down and won,t move -bless him, its like trying to move a block of concrete, i have to push him along the floor into the exam room, once in there he always goes and sits on the floor scales, think he feels safe there[least i can get his weight done easily
]Every time he goes he usually has to have something done, so can,t blame him really

Molly loves the vet until she has to get up on the table and get anything done. She's like "hey ! new people! dogs! kitties!!! new smells ! woohoooo!!!!....wait a minute....." lol She's pretty much the same way when she goes for a visit at the kennel. Happy to go off with just about anyone.
She is around 15 pounds and it takes two people to hold her when she has to get shots etc. She's pretty strong for her size and pretty stubborn. After all is done and she returns to the waiting room she's ready to go, unless of course a new dog or person comes along, then it's "woohoo!!!" all over again. She had the whole place rolling one of the last times I was there. She is a dancing doggie when petted on a certain part of her back and starts jigging her back legs like Michael Flatley for all she's worth. The more excited she gets, the more she does it, and even does it on her own by backing up under a crossed leg etc. While we waited she started her routine under my foot and kept the entire waiting room and staff entertained as she riverdanced ![]() She's such a little weirdo and I love her for it.
