Bully breeds and Cats..

My dog is 15 years old.. I adopted her at 8 years old and the last couple months she hasnt been doing to well.. Last month (January) she was diagnosed with a slight heart murmur. We brang her back to the vet on thursday(Feb.14th) as she didnt want to go outside or eat or take treats(which she loves) the vet says it has moved to the other side and now has a double heart murmur and its moving rapidly.. the vet is unsure on how long she has left.

Well we are doing research on breeds that are good with cats.. As I do cat rescue and am always having cats and kittens coming in and out. I do have 6 cats of my own now. My dog LOVES cats to death.. She helps care for the kittens we get in that dont have mothers. My family want a bully breed and know how loving they can be but are unsure if they will be ok with cats. I know they get a bad rep and it depends on individual animals. But any help with bully moms or dads will be appriciated. I want to do as much research as possible before making the leap..

Are you saying you're looking to replace your dog before she even dies? :sad: Or am I reading this improperly?

As far as bully breeds and cats...my dog doesn't tolerate cats well. She grew up with cats, and she was very good with them and other people's cats, but when they died about 5 years ago (they were 18 years old) my dog didn't tolerate cats ever again. She's offensive with cats.

On the other side, my dog doesn't tolerate other dogs very well either. She was well socialised as a pup, and played with a lot of dogs. When she was about 1 1/2 - 2 years old she snapped at a young dog that she often played with. Ever since that day she'll snap at another dog that comes in her space. She'll kind of play with other dogs under close supervision, but only if the other dog doesn't pay a lot of attention to her. More like she'll run around happily alongside another dog, but will snap if the dog jumps around her or tries to sniff her butt. She doesn't go for the kill, but she clearly tells them to leave her alone. She's defensive with dogs.

Bully breeds aren't for everyone. They often have dominant personalities, which many people have a hard time dealing with just because they miss the signs of the subtle dominant behavior, and only notice once it's become really obvious. Don't confuse dominance with aggression though.

The Staffie in our family was four when he came to us. The previous owner said he was good wth cats and allowed is to "try him out" for a week. She was right , PJ loves `Kota and Elmer, his two feline buddies.

No.. i'm not saying i'm trying to replace her.. i love my dog if i didnt i wouldnt be trying to keep her happy in her older days.. or wouldnt have saved her from being put to sleep..

I'm just trying to do research of the type of dog i would want.. if she does pass away.. she's the best dog.. she was her issues from health to aggression with other dogs and men but i deal with it.. i bring her to the vet every week to have her rechecked... and i brought her to 2 different vets for opinions.. the last vet scaled her a 4 on a scale from 1-5..1 being not so bad and 5 being the worst of heart murmurs.. that was just in 2 months..

I just want opinions on what people think would be a good dog with cats as i do cat rescue... I love the bully breeds and would love to rescue one..

IMHO, it depends more on the individual dog (and cat) then the breed.

If you are planning on getting a puppy I would strongly suggest that you find an ETHICAL breeder (especially if you are looking into a bully breed!) and when you get it home teach it how to behave with cats.

Bullis = Vet $$$ !!!

Check out my thread `Bulli`s Urinary Infections` in Health (1st pg) for an idea of Bulli health problems. I found an ETHICAL breeder thru Scarlet`s Bulli uncle Spyke (healthy) with a GREAT show rep. She is on Dogster & Dogbook (Facebook). Search Scarlet, Bulldog, Female, & Montreal if interested. Little `Net time. Can give web sites if interested.
