Just a thought, and it might be within your budget, even if it doesn't pan out. Mysterious lameness around here usually means a tick-borne disease. Many of them can have neurological effects... The tests for them give a lot of false negatives, so our vets usually treat if the symptoms are there, even if the test indicates nothing is there. Maybe your vet would be willing to try a short course of doxycycline or other appropriate antibiotic to see if there is any improvement?
