Red squirrels are the bane of birdfeeders, so it's probably a good thing you don't have any, obc. When we lived in Eau Claire, any time we saw a red squirrel we knew there would be chewed feeders in the near future!
They're not so bad on the feeders here, probably because they have a platform feeder easily accessible to them and our hopper feeders are all made of metal.
Red squirrels like evergreen trees, so if your area has primarily deciduous trees, you won't have that many red squirrels. Eau Claire was in the middle of jackpine territory and we have a fair number of pine plantations nearby here, so both places had a fair number of red squirrels!
Oh, I forgot to mention that the red squirrels in EC seemed to have a taste for aluminum.
They chewed all the aluminum ties off our chain link fence!
We had to have the fence retied with steel instead. Go figure!
