The owner of these dogs is a member on another forum I'm on and it seems that the article somewhat mis-represents the situation. He was not asleep and he was continuosly checking on the dogs. In retrospect I agree, the dogs should not have been out alone at all, but with a 6' privacy fence and the owner just inside the house, I can see why one would feel their dogs were safe.
