Shelter overloaded with animals

CORNWALL – The local animal shelter has been so overloaded with animals of late that it has shipped of some to a shelter in another community.
A number of animals that have been surrendered to or rescued by the OSPCA have been relocated to Brockville.
"(Many) of the animals seem to be purebreds," said Bonnie Bishop, inspector for the OSPCA of Cornwall and S,D & G.
There is no specific reason or season that the animals are being surrendered but there is an increase in wildlife rescues in the summer. However, this isn't the reason for the recent overload.
"They're coming in faster than they're going out and that's the problem," said Sophie Lemay, animal care attendent.
There is currently about 50 cats still waiting to be adopted and about a dozen dogs. The pound is filled and a waiting list has been created for owners who want to surrender their animals due to unforseen circumstances.
"Owners have 72 hours to call (for an impounded animal) and then they're put up for adoption," said Bishop.
The animals that were shipped to Brockville had been in the shelter for an extended period of time.
Being in a new place gives the animals more of a chance to be adopted because they're being seen by new people.
"Because we're a provincial organization, we have access to shelters all over Ontario," Bishop said
In the last four days, the shelter has been responsible for removing four dogs from multiple locations and have had two dogs and four cats voluntarily surrendered.
"Circumstances change," said Bishop, adding that the shelter would rather see animals go there than be abandoned or neglected.
Some of the breeds that are available include a bullmastiff and a pug for dogs and Burmese, Persian and Siamese cats.
