Yes, ccleaner is a great way to clean up old programs and tidy the registry.
I would go to a friends house and load up a USB key with all sorts of different types of spyware cleaners, etc and carefully use them one by one.
My DH contaminated our computer so badly once that it took 6 hours to clean, but with patience it can be done successfully.
