The only way is to kill the queen and to do that, poison has to be taken back to her to work.

You can use a small jam jar with the lid closed tightly, then tape with duct tape and pierce a few small holes in the lid.

Recipe:

1 cup water
2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons boric acid.

You can use cotton balls at the bottom of the jar to soak up the liquid if you are concerned about an animal knocking over the jar and spilling the liquid out.

When talking to a pest control friend, he stated that was the only way they were able to eliminate ants colonies.
