Looking for help

Hi, I have a wonderful little friend named Yogurt. He is a mix between Chihuahua and Cairn Terrier. I rescued him from Fuzzy Paws and have had him almost one year. He is about 2 years old and very sweet. About a month ago, he suddenly appeared to not walk right, gained about 3 pounds, and not able to jump up steps like he use to do. I took him to the vet twice, and thought it was a bum front right leg. With x-rays taken, there was no apparent cause for this sudden onset of problems.
I have been watching him alot and it seems that his hind legs don't have the strength to allow him to jump up steps. He seems to be off balance at times and runs into furniture when he runs around the house.
I think it's a neurological problem but I don't have the dollars to run the MRI or CatScan that the vet talks about. I wonder if anyone has a clue as to what Yogurt and I are dealing with? Any suggestions would help.

Thanks.
