Exclamation euthanasia --IV Catheter or just injection?

My 18 year old cat has cancer, a golf ball sized mass in his abdomen, irregularities in liver and digestive tract (confirmed by ultrasound). He will probably need to be p.t.s. sometime in the next few weeks.

My question is this: Should I ask for an IV catheter so that there is no chance of missing of the vein (causing pain) or should I have the vet do the injections directly into the leg? What is the most painless way?
