My cat, age 5-6, had a total colectomy in January 2009, after several years of severe constipation. The appendix and "junction" were removed also due to severity of disease. The surgeon said our cat may have diarrhea for the rest of his life but advised trying soft, moist food, (such as Tender Vittles) which is not readily available anymore. However, we have found that giving our cat 2-3 soft cat treats such as Pounce or Whiskerlickins (soft treats, not crunchy!), twice a day before his meals has helped tremendously in alleviating the diarrhea. These products must absorb liquid because we were unable to allow him those treats prior to surgery as they would exacerbate the constipation. I hope this will be helpful to others!
